With previews of gallery exhibitions, museum shows and auctions, Western Art Collector is the premier monthly magazine for collectors searching for works by talented living and past artists who depict the West in paintings and sculptures.
Welcome to the July issue of Western Art Collector! By the time you read this, Michael Clawson and I will be just coming back from Oklahoma and the Prix de West. There are many shows throughout the year that are of significant importance and include top master painters, but the Prix is the Oscars of the West. Why are these shows we write about in every issue so important? Important shows provide validation for the collector, artist and our market. These shows also help you feel connected to great art that speaks to your soul. When we buy the art we love, our focus also turns to the curiosity of the artist, and the investment and longevity of the piece. Western Art Collector is dedicated not only to bringing exceptional…
When we started our podcast, the American Art Collective, something that kept coming up in conversations with guests was how every artist had an interesting story. Every single artist, with virtually no exceptions. Even the “boring” stories—“I just fell into art by accident”—are unique in how simple and unremarkable they are, and how that quiet origin plays into an artist’s work and career. Again, every story is interesting. This idea has been vocalized on our podcast, but it’s something we’ve believed for a long time here in the pages of Western Art Collector. Our purpose here is to tell you stories—about the artists, the galleries, the museums, the collectors and even the art itself. Without the story, the art just becomes décor. But the stories unlock the lore and reveal…

1 Chris Segre-Lewis heads to Meyer Gallery Santa Fe-based Meyer Gallery has announced that Chris Segre-Lewis is now being represented by the gallery. Born in Jamaica, Segre-Lewis immigrated to Florida and then studied art in Kentucky. He’s been a teacher for more than 20 years. “His unique semiabstract landscapes capture the complex relationship between nature and human spirituality, inviting viewers into a deep, reflective experience,” the gallery notes. “Chris brings to his art a rich background that includes music, education and visual arts. His art is not just to be seen but to be experienced, encouraging viewers to explore their connection to the environment and their inner worlds.” To learn more, visit www.meyergalleries.com. 2 Modern cowboy painter Duke Beardsley has a new home in Texas Denver-based painter Duke Beardsley has…
Connecting with Teal Blake by telephone always has interesting results. Expecting the quiet silence of the studio or maybe the gentle strum of country radio in the background, callers to his phone frequently hear clanking metal pens, braying horses and bleating calves. For Blake, the art starts on horseback before it ever gets turned into brushstrokes in the studio, which means he lives life in the saddle—one ride and one painting at a time. And if he can’t get to your call, leave a message after the bleat. What’s so remarkable about the genuine cowboy lifestyle he leads, besides the exceeding rarity of real cowboy artists, is that it is the embodiment of Charles M. Russell, who serves as the unofficial great grandfather of the Cowboy Artists of America and…
This year, the Winborg family accomplished an impressive feat: three generations of the family were represented at The Russell in Great Falls, Montana. Larry C. Winborg and his son Jeremy Winborg each had pieces in the main event, and Jeremy’s daughter Swede Winborg, now 19, made her Western Art Week debut in the First Strike auction. “It’s quite an honor to have all three of us in The Russell—grandfather, son and granddaughter,” Larry says. “I don’t think it’s ever happened before.” Larry, who started it all, knew very early that he was going to work in the arts. “I decided in the first grade that I was going to be an artist,” he says. He had a long career as a gallery director in New York, but soon transitioned into…
