Before Lil Nas X spent 19 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 in 2019 with “Old Town Road.” Before Netflix released Concrete Cowboy and The Harder They Fall in 2021. Before Beyoncé became “Cowboy Carter” this spring, LaQuincey Reed was sculpting Black cowboys. His inspiration for doing so came from teaching middle school and high school art in Jones, Oklahoma. “Mr. Reed, you want to see me riding a bull?” Reed, who is Black, remembers one of his students asking. “I didn’t know anybody who was Black that was riding bulls or doing anything Western related.” An introduction. Wyoming is surrounded by wilderness. As the least populous state in the country and yet the 10th largest by area, the state is known for a sense of wild-ness. The Rocky Mountains flank most of the western half of Wyoming—which itself is a plateau—and the eastern half consists of high-elevation prairielands, known as the High Plains. The deepseated influences and culture of Indigenous peoples are imbued throughout the state as well, including the Shoshone, Arapaho, Lakota and Crow tribes. During the Klondike Gold Rush in the final years of the 19th century, miners, adventurers, explorers and fortune seekers trekked up to Alaska to look for gold. When they arrived, they found a very different world, one ruled by ice and snow. Horses were only so useful, so many resorted to sled dogs. It’s the stuff of Jack London books, because London was there during the Klondike years, which is how he got the idea for The Call of the Wild. Now in its fourth year, the event known as Art 2024 Tehachapi continues to grow in popularity. The Tehachapi Arts Commission has prepared for another successful showcase of 150 pieces celebrating the region and history of Tehachapi, California, seen through the eyes of 50 nationally recognized artists. The event kicks off in May with the annual paint-out, lasting four days, and the TAC providing artists with access to varying locations that are not always accessible to the general public. In 1958, Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater wrote to Joe Noggle in Prescott, Arizona, congratulating him on a plaque he designed honoring Teddy Roosevelt. “I am sure that Teddy, from his place in Heaven, is just as happy over this recognition as we are in Arizona are,” Goldwater wrote. The plaque features a portrait of Roosevelt sculpted by George Phippen. Its production was rocky, but it was the beginning of an extraordinary history of lost-wax bronze casting in Prescott that continues today. The lost-wax process is thousands of years old but was a new experience for three intrepid pioneers in Prescott. For 11 years, Maxwell Alexander Gallery has been hosting its Summer Small Works online exhibition. In celebration of Western traditions living on through new artistic interpretations, comes another compelling edition of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Western Art Show and Sale hosted at the CFD Old West Museum in Cheyenne, Wyoming. “Whether our artists are from the West or fell in love with it later in life, each piece is a new interpretation of that original Western dream,” says Amanda Marshall, the art show and events coordinator. The influence of one animal—the horse—has had quite a substantial grip over the human race, reaching far back in time and history, and continuing to prevail today. How do we know this? This year, the Winborg family accomplished an impressive feat: three generations of the family were represented at The Russell in Great Falls, Montana. Larry C.
