Welcome to Western Art Collector’s May issue! We’ve been on the road a lot lately and May is yet another big month! Executive editor Michael Clawson is headed out on assignment for our sister title, Native American Art this month. First, he is attending SWAIA Native Fashion Week in Santa Fe, New Mexico, from May 7 to 11. Then, he goes right back to Santa Fe on May 21 through 26 for Native Elements, an immersive market-style show that will take place at several places around the city, including at the beautiful Santa Fe Botanical Garden. If you are not a subscriber of Native American Art you may want to add it to your must-have list of magazines. Do you have a favorite Western masterpiece in your home? Every collector…
In March, my wife and I took my 10-year-old daughter to New York City. It was part birthday gift and part rite of passage. I promised before we left that I wouldn’t make any art stops unless she wanted to see art. No galleries. No art museums. No studio visits. I wasn’t about to hijack her trip. The one museum we did visit was the American Museum of Natural History on New York’s Upper West Side. On the itinerary was the enormous blue whale in the Hall of Ocean Life, the various animal dioramas and dinosaur fossils, including the magnificent T-rex skeleton that ferociously commanded a marble-white gallery on the fourth floor. During our stroll through the museum—moments after bumping into a staff member from the National Cowboy & Western…

Gary Carter was ready to start successful career in illustration, but then fate intervened when he was offered a chance to present his work in a Southern Arizona gallery. The show was a hit, and 33-year-old Carter quickly abandoned illustration to take up fine art instead. The move was the start of a long and acclaimed career that would span throughout Western art. Carter, whose worked touched several generations of art collectors, died January 31. He was 85 years old. Although he spent much of his career in Montana, Carter was originally from Hutchinson, Kansas. “My family started migrating during the Cherokee Strip land rush and settled in with the Kiowa. My folks started their migrating not too long after I made my debut. Seems like I’ve been rambling ever…
