The Datai Langkawi in Malaysia has recently unveiled fresh interiors and new amenities, 25 years after its opening in 1993. The property was designed by the late Australian architect Kerry Hill, who chose to maximise the views of the Datai Bay from the treetops by locating its main building atop a forest ridge. The result is a tranquil experience with mesmerising views of the sea and minimal disruption to the tropical foliage. It also sets the scene for communing with nature—the resort hosts guided nature walks for guests and has built a new nature centre run by naturalists and marine biologists. Could you share more about your creative process? I always look for a common denominator, which can be something that is really ordinary or familiar, and I’ll try to change our perception towards it so we can see it in a slightly different light. It’s just to go into the unknown to try something that normally you wouldn’t try, and reversing something that’s existing. You use porcelain in many of your works. Why the interest in this particular material? Although I’m not trained as a potter, it’s a very interesting material because it has many different values attached to it.
