While our design sector may be considered a late bloomer, what’s heartening is that Singapore is beginning to garner attention on the international design platform. At the recent Milan Design Week, homegrown design studios Studio Juju, Lanzavecchia + Wai, Creativeans and Hans Tan Studio displayed their works alongside established names such as Tom Dixon, Paola Lenti and Philippe Starck. Some credit goes to the DesignSingapore Council, which provides local designers with grants to help them promote their works at international shows.
Singaporean designers, too, are coming into their own, developing unique styles that stand out from the plethora of designs by their Western counterparts.
