THE BIG QUESTION I’ve started exercising but I’m gaining weight. What gives? Answer The most likely explanation is that all your workouts have increased your appetite. “When you burn more [kilojoules], your body wants to compensate for this loss by eating more,” explains dietitian Torey Armul. Indeed, a 2019 study in the Journal Of Clinical Nutrition found that people tend to lose less weight than expected when they exercise because of increased appetite and the resulting extra kilojoules consumed. Armul advises doing some dietary analysis to check the kilojoules coming in aren’t dwarfing the ones you’re burning.
