Basketball was the first sport I was ever obsessed with. As a teen in the ‘90s, I’d watch Sydney Kings games with my family, and even set 3am alarms to watch the NBA playoffs with my dad. That LOVE TURNED INTO PLAYING; we even had a Chicago Bulls backboard and rim in the backyard where I’d practise my three-pointers. All the teams I supported back then were men’s teams, but now we’re in this amazing time for women in sport. Today, basketball fans are cheering on local WNBL teams, setting alarms to watch the WNBA championship games, and feeling RIDICULOUS LEVELS OF EXCITEMENT to be supporting our Aussie Opals play the best teams on the planet at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney this month. If you aren’t…
I Want to Sync My Workouts with My Cycle. What Are the Basics? ANSWER Start off by easing yourself in. In the week before your period, focus on lighter lifts (think: mobility work with resistance bands). Your hormones peak here, leading to fatigue, reduced access to glycogen stores and a higher core body temp, so less may be more. Then, as your period begins, oestrogen and progesterone levels are low, so it’s an ideal time to lift heavy and go for a PB, says female athlete performance physiologist Dr Stacy Sims. The catch here: delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) is also more likely during your period, per a recent review, so focus on recovery between workouts, protein intake and lots of stretching. As for the weeks after your flow? You’ll…

A Better Bite Fan of plant-based ‘meat’ products? Chew on a new study that suggests the proteins in some of these substitutes aren’t as well absorbed by human cells as those from OG meat. The authors, whose findings appear in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, compared genuine chicken with a product made of soy and wheat gluten. The next step, they explain, is to find ingredients that can be added to meat subs to improve the protein uptake and boost their health cred in the process. 1 EATING THIS MANY AVOCADOS A DAY IS ASSOCIATED WITH A SLIGHT DECREASE IN UNHEALTHY CHOLESTEROL LEVELS AS WELL AS BETTER OVERALL DIET QUALITY. Exercising helps produce more natural tears and alleviates dry-eye symptoms, according to new research. After a short treadmill run, study participants experienced a meaningful boost in tear quantity. The jog spurred the moisture boost, but any cardio session of 15 minutes or longer will do, say the study authors. So do sweat it… the next time your peepers are parched. 01 BUZZ OFF The post-workout buzz applies to cardio lovers and lifters alike. “Endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain… triggering a feeling similar to euphoria,” explains exercise physiologist Dr Jodie Moss. “This helps boost your mood and reduce feelings of tension, anxiety, depression and fatigue.” 02 COME THROUGH DRIPPING Shower or not, you’ll likely still be sweating for a while post-workout. “This is just your body trying to return to a state of balance,” says Moss. Cool down and dry off faster with an icy drink: when cold water hits your stomach, thermoreceptors signal to your brain to start regulating your sweat. 03 STITCH FIX Your body begins repairs before you’ve towelled off. Exercise causes micro tears in your muscles; in response, your immune system sends in stem…
