The Best of Both Worlds

Last January we introduced The Contemporary L West, our inaugural special section devoted to contemporary Western art. The issue also had our coverage of the Coors Western Art Exhibit & Sale, which leans more contemporary, as well as several museum and gallery shows that featured artists who were pushing the envelope of what Western art can be. The first events I attended after that 2022 issue came out were interesting because I was hearing the most fascinating ng stories from Western art fans, collectors and readers. While we have exhibits scheduled out as far ahead as 2024 through our curator, Dr. Tricia Loscher, I am still enthralled by our featured exhibit Light and Legacy: The Art and Techniques of Edward S. Curtis. This is the largest collection of its kind and every time I visit the museum, I spend time discovering a new aspect to the exhibit I had not noticed previously. Going Big

During the famous National Western “Graphite pencil may not be viewed as the most popular fine art medium in Western art, [but] I’ve always dreamed of taking pencil to new heights. I could not be more honored than to be considered in this modern venue, and be a part of the Denver skyline during the stock show,” Mast says. “In today’s world, ‘Quietness is Beautiful.’ In quietness and solitude I draw best. It’s the ‘small and simple’ things—the Western traditions, the ways of life and families that inspire me. I hope that my drawings remind people of the beauty all around us and of a simpler time.
