I arrived in the world of magazines by way of newspapers. There was a joke newspaper journalists would share with their colleagues from the other branches of media: “We have a face for radio, and a voice for newspapers.” It was a joke that ported over very well after I arrived in the magazine business. Twenty-four years after my first newspaper gig, I find myself behind a microphone weekly for our show, the American Art Collective. It’s not radio, but rather podcasting. The show, produced by International Artist Publishing, which publishes Western Art Collector and four of our other titles within the art world, features down interviews with the movers and shakers of the art world. We’ve had gallery owners, auction sit specialists, museum curators and presidents, collectors and, of course,…

An Albert Bierstadt painting titled Buffalo was recently on loan to the National Museum of Wildlife Art, until the owner had other plans for the work—they donated it to the museum. The image shows a buffalo resting on the ground while five other animals mill about behind it. The painting, which has a moody background and a mustard-yellow foreground, was painted in 1859, quite early in the painter’s long career. Although Bierstadt was widely known, both in the 1800s and today, for being a landscape painter, his works with figures or wildlife subjects are well documented and just as prized as his landscapes. In fact, one of his most famous works is The Last of the Buffalo, showing a Native American rider doing battle with a buffalo on the edge…
Featured Star The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition names Ryan Kirby the featured artist of the 2023 edition of the event. Collectors, mark your calendars for February when the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition returns to Charleston, South Carolina. This year’s event will celebrate 41 years of SEWE and its role in wildlife art. The event always picks an artist to represent the show, and this year’s featured artist is North Carolina painter Ryan Kirby. Known for his works of waterfowl, wild turkey, whitetail deer, elk and sporting dogs, the artist has been painting since 1989 when he lived in Illinois. Much of his childhood was spent outdoors, either on a farm or exploring nature. “When I was in high school, you could even take your deer tag into the principal’s office to get…
1 GEORGE HILL OFFERS NEW TAKES ON WILDLIFE IMAGERY Western Art Collector was on hand at the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival in September in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. While there we were fortunate enough to meet painter George Hill. The Montana artist creates unique works featuring wildlife, particularly deer, elk, pronghorn and horses, although he also paints many other animals. The subjects themselves are rendered in a realistic style, but they are placed against single-color backgrounds and occasionally within thick borders, which gives the work a very contemporary and modern look. The work is fascinating and worth checking out. See more of his painting at www.georgehillart.com. 2 BRYAN HAYNES EXPLORES THE FARM LIFE Missouri painter Bryan Haynes has just completed an incredible and large farm scene measuring 36 by 60…
