With previews of gallery exhibitions, museum shows and auctions, Western Art Collector is the premier monthly magazine for collectors searching for works by talented living and past artists who depict the West in paintings and sculptures.
Welcome to our 171st issue—that’s 14 years and 3 months—of Western Art Collector. As we reflect each issue on what we are proud of this month it is that Western Art Collector is, and will continue to be, a monthly magazine. That is correct, 12 times a year you receive the newest news and information via WAC (as we affectionately call it). Our beautiful printed magazine, website and digital issue. Did you know that every single month our content changes entirely on our website to mirror the most recent Western art news in our magazine? This is no small feat. Why do we do it? There are several reasons. First and foremost, we have become the voice of the Western art world. Michael Clawson and his team are phenomenal. He…
One of our primary goals here at Western Art Collector is to show our art-buying readers some of the best artwork on the market so they can make informed purchases at galleries, museums, auctions or even directly from artists’ studios. But another goal we have is to document the history of Western art. The history that happened a long time ago, but also the new history being made right now at art venues around the country. I come from a newspaper and reporting background, and one of the things that was repeated in newsrooms is the old quote, “News is the first draft of history.” I believed in that then with newspapers, and I believe in that now here with this magazine. The stories that appear here in this issue,…

Susan Green Marcia Manhart Endowed Associate Curator for Contemporary Art and Design Philbrook Museum of Art (918) 748-5375 www.philbrook.org What event (gallery show, museum exhibit, etc.) in the next few months are you looking forward to, and why? Another World: The Transcendental Painting Group will be on view at the Philbrook Museum of Art this fall. The exhibition, organized by the Crocker Art Museum, highlights the extraordinary work of 11 artists associated with the Transcendental Painting Group (TPG). In the early-20th century, the TPG used the power of abstraction to explore spiritual ideas, emotions, and experiences. These immersive works, such as Agnes Pelton’s Birthday (1943) and Emil Bisttram’s Oversoul (ca. 1941), are powerful intersections of abstraction and the search for universal truths. The need to express shared uncertainties and the…
It’s not the most Westerny of art museums—even when only counting museums east of the Mississippi River—but the Chrysler Museum of Art, like many other great museums across the country, has Western art amid its collection. Thomas Hill, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran and many other important works are part of the collection. The museum, located in Norfolk, Virginia, unveiled a new exhibition featuring recent gifts to the museum. One of the works is a contemporary photograph by Greta Pratt that not only represents the West, but also women in the West, Western fashion, the Arizona landscape, silver-adorned parade saddles and modern rodeos. The image, Julee and her Daughters, Chandler, AZ, will be part of Building a Legacy: Chrysler Collects for the Future, which opens November 19 and continues through March…
