Welcome to the October issue of Western Art Collector. As our team attends more and more events and more previews are lining up again, it is time to bring up the journey of collecting contemporary and historic Western art. There is nothing better than spending the day in Park City, Utah, having lunch at a local cafe and then strolling down Main Street, walking in galleries, talking to the gallery staff and buying an original work of art. Over the years I’ve done several art panels at museum events, and recently some online through Zoom, and one of the most popular questions is “How do you define Western art?” It’s a fair question, but one that ends with fewer fireworks than maybe audience members are anticipating. Anyone expecting me to make bold proclamations—“Western art is made only west of the Mississippi River,” or “It’s only cowboys and cattle”—are sure to be let down. I think Western art is very much like the West: it’s vast and there’s room for anyone who wants to come visit or stay awhile. Working in the museum world, I have a long list of museums I want to see but haven’t yet. It’s sort of like living next to a major national park: you don’t go as much as you think you should. But next year is the 150th anniversary of the founding of Yellowstone National Park, and I’m looking forward to all the things regional museums (including the Center) will do to commemorate such a significant event. Every year at the National Museum of Wildlife Art members of the Collectors Circle group meet to discuss ways to support the Wyoming art destination. As part of the event, members also vote on which works to acquire on behalf of the museum. At this year’s event, held on July 14, the Collectors Circle voted to acquire four new works from a diverse group of artists. The works are Tiger, created out of LEGO bricks by Chinese contemporary artist and activist Ai Weiei; the bronze work Diana (The Hunt) from 20th -century American sculptor Harriet Frishmuth; the 2021 oil painting Wasp Nest by surrealist still life painter Scott Fraser; and the 2021 watercolor The Sacred White Buffalo of Pojoaque by contemporary wildlife painter Scott Kelley.
