The late screenwriter, author, movie producer and photographer Bill Wittliff will be honored with the exhibition Lonesome Dove: Photographs by Bill Wittliff at the Booth Western Art Museum in Cartersville, Georgia. The show opens September 19 and continues through February 9, 2020. Wittliff, who rose to fame writing episodes of Lonesome Dove, was a photographer for much of his life, including on different movie and television sets he was on. “Bill was shooting with an ordinary single-lens reflex camera on black-and-white Tri-X film,” says friend and author Stephen Harrigan. “There was already an official unit photographer to take publicity stills on the Lonesome Dove set, and I just assumed that Bill, as the writer/producer of the movie, was making a private photographic record. On June 25 the city council of Fort Worth, Texas, accepted the donation of a bronze monument to honor Western icon Red Steagall. The work, titled Red Steagall, Always Ridin’ for the Brand in Fort Worth, Texas, will be donated by the group Friends of Red Steagall, which commissioned Texas painter and sculptor Bruce Greene to create the bronze. The work, which shows Steagall on a horse, will be placed outside the Cowtown Coliseum at the Fort Worth Stockyards. As a fifth-generation Wyoming native, Lindsay Linton Buk knows firsthand the effect women have had on making her home state what it is today. For her upcoming exhibition Women in Wyoming, the photographer traveled more than 15,000 miles, developed 600 rolls of medium-format film, recorded 3,000 minutes of audio interview footage and met with women throughout the state, including artists, Supreme Court justices, politicians, authors, linguists, pilots, outdoorswomen and more. The result? A celebration of Wyoming’s women and a platform to share their stories through large-scale portraits, interactive elements and audio soundscapes, arranged thematically by chapters—including Chapter I: Breaking Boundaries; Chapter II: Filling the Void; Chapter III: Power; and Chapter IV: Rising. Thanks to a generous grant from the Eugene V. and Clare Thaw Charitable Trust, Nuevo Mexico Profundo and Cornerstones Community Partnerships are teaming up to restore the San Agustín, a historic church in the Gallinas River Valley near Las Vegas, New Mexico. San Agustín, also known as San Augustine, is a mission of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Las Vegas, and is one in a string of historic churches slowly succumbing to ruin in the river valley. The collaborative project organized by Nuevo Mexico Profundo and Cornerstones Community Partnerships, both New Mexico-based organizations striving to preserve these historic architectural and cultural landmarks, will use the grant to restore the church for future generations.
