Collector Driven Once our new issue is released I grab an advanced copy of it, head to my favorite morning coffee spot, sit in the corner and go through it story by story, page by page. When I do this, I’m not looking for errors or things we could have done better. Moab Arts and Recreation Center is hosting the second annual Red Rock Arts Festival beginning October 6 and continuing through October 13 in scenic Moab, Utah. The weeklong event will welcome more than 100 artists from all over North America for the festival events, including the ninth annual Plein Air Moab painting competition. Other events include the Red Rock Street Fest, which takes place October 13 from noon to 8 p.m., and features artisan vendors, live music, community booths and demonstrations, plein air painting and the ArTTrails Sculpture Exhibition. This year’s art festival will celebrate land-inspired art, and artists of all levels are accepted—the festival boasts works from $20 to $1,500. Now open at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts in Salt Lake City is an exhibition dedicated to the life and work of Chiura Obata, a Japanese-American whose work were inspired by the West, particularly national parks such as the Grand Canyon and Yosemite. Chiura Obata: An American Modern is the first internationally traveling survey of the artist’s work and features more than 150 paintings, watercolors, prints and screens, from intimate ikebana studies to grand landscapes of the American West. The exhibition will also feature more than 30 drawings and paintings documenting his forced internment during World War II, including many scenes from the Topaz Relocation Center near Delta, Utah, where he was held from 1942 to 1943. The weekend-long event will give professional working artists the opportunity to learn and ask questions about the business side of their art careers.
