With previews of gallery exhibitions, museum shows and auctions, Western Art Collector is the premier monthly magazine for collectors searching for works by talented living and past artists who depict the West in paintings and sculptures.
In the last few issues, I have been discussing the importance of brick and mortar galleries and the experience that comes from buying art from these physical locations. Lately, I have moderated several panel discussions on this process, panels made up of collectors, art dealers, auction professionals and museum curators. What everyone seems to agree on is that buying art is a personal experience that is made better when a collector has someone like a gallery owner or art dealer to offer advice, find new artists and show collectors how to support an artist throughout the duration of their art careers. Collectors are passionate people who care deeply about the art they buy and add to their own personal collections. Most collectors choose the art they buy via deep emotional…
OWNER/PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT Shanan Campbell Wells Sorrel Sky Gallery Durango & Santa Fe and Sorrel Sky Art & Design Santa Fe, NM; Durango, CO Approaching a business with just a brick-and-mortar view can add to the innate risk of owning and growing that business. I’ve learned to keep a broader perspective and approach things from all angles. This attitude enables us to build lasting connections with our clients and our artists. We work hard to balance both a strong online presence, using social media, art hosting websites, and our own website, with personalized client relationships. Recognizing the importance of that balance enables us to make art as accessible as possible, in ways that people individually respond to. In a time where our exposure to news and the world, in general, can…
Hotel Chaco, a boutique property inspired by the ancient architecture and civilization of Chaco Canyon, is now offering day adventures to the Chaco Canyon National Monument, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its sprawling collection of ruins that date back 1,100 years ago Previous excursions hosted by the 118-room boutique, luxury hotel located in Old Town Albuquerque have been immensely popular, which has prompted the hotel to return this year with an expanded schedule and new offerings, including overnight “glamping”—that’s glamourous camping for our true-blue cowboy readers—trips that will coincide with the spring and fall equinoxes. The Couse-Sharp Historic Site, home to several key buildings belonging to Taos Society of Artists founders Eanger Irving Couse and Joseph Henry Sharp, has recently expanded to include an adjacent 5,000-square-foot adobe building that will be the future home to an archive and research facility devoted to the famous group of artists who settled in Taos, New Mexico. The building, which has housed the Mission Gallery for many years, was once the home of Sharp, whose two Taos studios are currently part of the Couse-Sharp Historic Site. The acquisition of the building, spearheaded by the nonprofit Couse Foundation, was finalized and made public in October 2017. The building will undergo an extensive renovation before the archive and research facility takes shape. “Our team of local architects has developed plans to…
The 46th edition of the Western Art Association’s National Fine Art Show & Auction will take place May 18 at the Kittitas Valley Event Center in Ellensburg, Washington. More than 45 Western artists will be participating, including Sandra Haynes, this year’s poster artist, who created Living Wild, featuring five horses. “Living Wild depicts some of Sandra’s neighbors, the wild horses of Central Oregon. We are delighted that she agreed to paint our poster art and be the featured artist for 2018,” says JoAnn Wise with the Western Art Association. “Sandra has been a part of the ‘Ellensburg Show’ for a number of years offering a wide variety of media and subject matter. A painting dramatizing these magnificent animals stays true to that part of our mission ‘to preserve our Western…
The National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, has announced the purchase of five works of contemporary art for the museum’s permanent collection. The works, from a variety of living and deceased artists, were chosen on February 24 at the Blacktail Gala, an evening of art collecting modeled after the museum’s Collectors Circle Dinner, another event aimed at bringing new works into the museum’s expanding collection. More than 150 guests were in attendance to participate in the event. “Over the course of only three years, Blacktail Gala has contributed 14 works of contemporary wildlife art to the permanent collection. These acquisitions have increased our ability to show the many diverse ways artists are exploring humanity’s relationship with nature through art, a core part of our mission,” says Adam…
