PHOTOGRAPHY The Valley of Fire is 46,000 acres of red Aztec sandstone located in the Mojave Desert. It is an easy 50-mile drive from Las Vegas. It was the second shoot I had done with then aspiring male model Paul Boulon. The desert literally glows. Its red and pink tones permeate every vista. The rock outcroppings, nooks and crannies provide frames that cradle the human body. It is hard to imagine a better place to do figurative art photography. Except for one detail I overlooked when choosing the Valley of Fire as our location! It is a state park, not a national park. The distinction may seem insignificant. But different laws govern nudity in national parks, where being naked is technically legal. (Though occasionally I have had to argue that…

JC's master gave him only one day to work with me, Glenn Michael the photographer from Florida. An abandoned rail graveyard near Yuma, California was one of two locations we could fit in that day. During the shoot it became apparent that a desert location was probably a punishment. Did the good doctor sanction the shoot because he knew JC would suffer that day? Perhaps. I will never know. JC was born without hair follicles or sweat glands, a rare congenital medical condition that made air conditioning necessary for his survival. I did not know that as we trekked out into the desert. A few miles in we were looking to find shade wherever we could. We carried extra water to cool him down during the frequent breaks needed. And…
