Like many friendships, it began with a mutual interest. For U.S. billionaire Thomas S. Kaplan and Hermès artistic director Pierre-Alexis Dumas it was a rather exotic one: big cats. When Dumas found out about Kaplan’s organization, Panthera, which is devoted to preserving the cats’ ecosystems, he thought of one of his favorite scarf artists, 20th-century naturalist Robert Dallet, renowned for his tiger, lion, cheetah, and leopard illustrations. Decades ago Dumas père had commissioned 25 scarves from Dallet and later purchased a portion of his work for future Hermès prints. The idea for Jung Yun’s fearless and thrilling debut novel grew out of an infamous 2007 home invasion in the affluent town of Cheshire, Connecticut. Shelter (Picador, $26) begins with the narrator, Kyung Cho, taking in his wealthy immigrant parents after they have been brutally attacked in their home. “I wanted to tell the story from the perspective of someone just outside of the crime,” Yun says. “Maybe not the victim himself, but someone victimized in a different way.” Or many different ways. There is a photograph on exhibit at Hillwood, Marjorie Merriweather Post’s estate in Washington, DC, of the cereal heiress dressed for a costume ball as Marie-Antoinette. A threestrand necklace is visible, but her elaborate wig makes it difficult to ascertain the presence of earrings. Post did, in fact, own a pair that had belonged to the queen herself. The pear-shaped diamonds had been whisked out of France before the Revolution, sold to a Russian princess, and then bought by Cartier. Watch aficionados often refer to a personal “grail,” the piece that represents the pinnacle of their collections. After 25 years I’m occasionally and increasingly asked by readers of a book I published in 1991 called American Psycho (later made into a movie in 2000) about where its narrator, Patrick Bateman, would be now. This question has become even more prevalent lately, on the book’s 25th anniversary, either at appearances and signings or on social media, usually while fans share this year’s Halloween costume pic—almost always the blood-splattered sheer slicker that Christian Bale’s Bateman wears in the film as he kills supposed Pierce & Pierce rival Paul Allen (Jared Leto) with an ax to the head.
