1982 ROYAL FLUSH “Monte Carlo,” the writer Lesley Blanch told T&C in 1982, “is a deeply religious center. Its god is Mammon, and the temple is the Hôtel de Paris.” Caroline of Monaco, photographed with her Yorkie Tiffany by Slim Aarons, was merely its princess. She got the title from her father’s side, but she inherited the beauty and style from her mother Grace Kelly. Caroline’s daughter Charlotte Casiraghi is the current beneficiary.…

I am not one who would usually choose to live in a pink and green world, but whenever I’m in Los Angeles I stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I trace my fondness for the place to my first visit, which occurred circa August 1978, on a family vacation up the Pacific Coast Highway. We first spent a few days visiting friends of my parents in L.A., where, among other touristy things, we had lunch one afternoon at the Polo Lounge. My awareness of Beverly Hills as the home of the stars hadn’t yet fully formed; as we drove around I overheard details of lore and glamour in my parents’ conversations that hinted at the famous names who might be breathing the same earthly oxygen behind all those privacy gates…
DANA THOMAS When she wrote 2007’s Deluxe: How Luxury Lost Its Luster, the Paris-based writer knew the rich were growing weary of the massification of luxe brands. A MATTER OF TASTE I have never e-mailed or sent a comment to a publication concerning an article. However, after receiving your December/January issue, I feel obligated to do just that. The article “When Grandmum Is Away” was totally inappropriate. Surely there was a better way to advertise jewelry, perfume, and nail polish! Your beautiful magazine dropped the ball on this one. Arlin Lewis, LUBBOCK, TX TOWN & COUNTRY RESPONDS: We received a number of letters questioning our judgment about our December/January jewelry story. Town & Country is a magazine that cherishes its past even as it reinvents itself today, and we often comb the archives for inspiration. This particular shoot was inspired by a similar story that ran in the magazine in 1972 (right). What we loved about it…
