Hollywood movies often seem to exist in a netherworld, removed from the political goings-on of the day and the great social and economic forces roiling the nation. Unlike television, whose lower budgets and relatively quick production schedules allow it to respond on a dime to contemporary events, film lumbers like a locomotive, traveling vast distances from conception to completion, only slowly gathering steam and hardly ever shifting course. The fevered subjects that make a writer’s blood boil and lead to issue-driven scripts hardly ever are the ones that hold sway when those scripts reach the finish line in theaters. Politics is all well and good offscreen, but onscreen it stinks like an old fish. That’s why movies so rarely are topical, even when they might seem to be. For anything…

TV PILOT SEASON’S HOT TRENDS: FEWER SHOWS, BIGGER STARS, TRUMP Deal of the Week With few TV shows canceled and lots still on the bench, the broadcast networks headed into pilot season this year with fewer needs. In fact, at press time, the total number of pilots ordered hovered around 70, down from nearly 90 a year earlier. “Everyone is trying to be more disciplined in their approach to volume,” Universal Television president Pearlena Igbokwe told THR in January. Boston Stronger Split-Up Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman and wife Erin Hurley — whose union and inspirational story are the subject of the upcoming film Stronger — are getting divorced. “Jeff and Erin have decided that it is best to move forward as friends,” a Bauman family spokesperson tells THR about the couple who have been married since November 2014. Sources close to the movie, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany, say Stronger, based on Bauman’s memoir, won’t be altered because of the split. Every year during pilot season, the kitchen in Sharon Klein’s Santa Monica home transforms into a war room. At one end of the center island is Klein, executive vp casting at the Fox TV Group, on her phone lining up talent for the studio’s batch of pilots; at the other, her husband, 20th Century Fox TV president of business operations Howard Kurtzman, on his phone seeing that those deals get made. “Together we can get an entire pilot done,” says the 16-year Fox veteran. “I’ll be like, ‘You’ve got to call so-and-so and get this done right now.’ ” That sense of urgency never has been more crucial, as Klein, 52, whose big break came on the 1998 HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon, now is fighting for…

La La Land Mary Zophres To create the clothes for a retro-realistic Los Angeles, Zophres started in her own backyard. Director Damien Chazelle cut together a montage of romantic musicals and films for visual reference, including The Band Wagon (1953), Singin’ in the Rain (1952) and Strictly Ballroom (1992). “I went to Vidiots [in Santa Monica] and started renting all the films and printed up freeze-frame images,” says Zophres. For Ryan Gosling’s character-defining two-tone dance shoes, she hit Worldtone dance store in L.A.’s Westwood. (The style is the Nueva Epoca Buenos Aires.) “Ryan loved them, and they are so right for [Sebastian].” Emma Stone, as Mia, had a matching pair. Five-time Emmy-winning production designer Rene Lagler, 75, has done it all, including countless TV specials and series such as The Mary Tyler Moore Hour; awards shows including the 57th Oscars; and events such as the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1984 Summer Olympics in L.A., Democratic National Conventions and President Clinton’s inaugural galas. And for that, he’ll be one of four Lifetime Achievement Award honorees at the 21st annual Art Directors Guild Excellence in Production Design Awards. The only possible cure for A Cure for Wellness would have been to chop it down to no more than 79 minutes. Overproduced and underthought- out, this attempt at an old-fashioned Gothic thriller looks great but is beyond silly. And for those who haven’t tuned out before the film staggers to a close after nearly 2½ hours, the payoff offers nothing in the way of genre pleasures or thematic resonance. After The Lone Ranger and now this, perhaps it’s time for director Gore Verbinski to make another animated film (Rango, anyone?) to recharge his batteries. An agreement between the Federal Aviation Administration and the City of Santa Monica — calling for the closure of the airport by 2029 — was supposed to provide resolution, but it didn’t stop hundreds of anti-airport protesters from gathering to effectively say, “This is a bum deal.” The consent decree provides for a reduction in the length of the runway, which would cut back on jet traffic and charter operations and address a primary complaint of the anti-airport faction. After 10 years at the Royal Opera House, BAFTA will make a detour for its 70th edition, due to refurbishments at its regular venue. Naturally, this being London, it’s to another world-famous piece of architectural history: the vast Royal Albert Hall (about a 30-minute Uber ride from the event’s usual home).
