I’ve been thinking a lot about mental wellbeing this month, and how I can move it up my personal priority list. The reason for this can be pinned to one word – a word I’ve used and heard more in the last two weeks than I have my entire life – ‘languishing’. Languishing is a condition currently at the centre of global debate, sparked by a New York Times story which described it as the “neglected middle child of mental health”. It can be summed up in simple terms as a general state of feeling ‘blah’, of struggling to find joy in things. To mark its 100th birthday, the Archibald Prize will be honoured with an exhibition that includes portraits drawn from every decade since the exhibition opened in 1921.
