French design brand Roche Bobois believes in turning abodes into spaces with personality, wit and creativity. This brand philosophy is apparent in its collections, which fuse craft traditions with innovative materials and forms. For this collaboration, the French company teamed up with three homegrown talents to imbue their showrooms in Singapore with soul and character. If you ask Japanese designer Kensaku Oshiro about his formative years, two memorable experiences stand out: the beautiful sun-kissed summer holidays when he visited his hometown in Okinawa, and the cherished time he spent drawing and discussing all things design-related with his childhood friend, Yuichiro Kobayashi. These fond boyhood memories proved to be so influential that Oshiro was determined to move to Milan to become a product designer; and that was exactly what he did as a teenager. Alone figure looks out across the rolling hills beyond, standing on the terrace of a colossal building that looks like the stuff of dreams. It sounds almost like the subject of a film still or a painting, and yet this beautiful sight does truly exist—it’s a photograph depicting an enviable holiday house in Khao Yai, Thailand. Situated close to the lush Khao Yai National Park, this wondrous abode is the result of a three-year journey embarked upon by the clients together with a tripartite of Singapore firms: architectural practice Park + Associates, MEC Engineering, and landscape architecture firm Compound Collaborative. Years ago in Mexico, Italian designers Arianna Lelli Mami and Chiara Di Pinto enjoyed an incredible moment of serendipity; the two university friends had each embarked separately on a trip to the country without prior knowledge of the other’s itinerary, and met by chance on a secluded beach on the Pacific coast. After that fortuitous day, the pair decided to continue on the rest of their holiday together. Among the unit’s strengths are its abundance of natural light and space, and the absence of bay windows, which facilitates spatial efficiency. On the desk of Brazilian architect Marcio Kogan lies Michael Sheridan’s book, Room 606, about Danish architect Arne Jacobsen’s famous SAS Royal Hotel. “He drew every little thing—from the teaspoon to the architecture. I profoundly admire it,” says Kogan, the founder of Brazilian architecture firm Studio Mk27. Like its spaces, the furniture he designs for brands such as Minotti exhibits a trademark sensibility to craft and materials, and his penchant for clean forms. When homeowners Jon Siao and May Tan first encountered this duplex apartment in an old condominium estate in Singapore, they liked the idea of living in a two-storey unit but were hesitant about whether they could make it their dream home.
