Every place tells a unique story and often, design works as an eloquent and effective medium to convey this tale. One just has to look at the prominent architecture, the traditional crafting methods and the creative culture that underlines it to get a real grasp of a community and its culture. While a sense of place is a tenet of good design, I’ve noticed that alongside the importance of conserving what’s local, there’s also an evolving language of global style. What keeps you inspired? I think that design inspiration stems from a passion for life and the world around you. I’m a passionate observer of everything around me—I’m like a big sponge that absorbs it all. This inspires me to ponder the essential questions about life. NEVERENDING GLORY Inspired by the iconic chandeliers in five of the world’s most famous theatres and concert halls—La Scala in Milan, Palais Garnier in Paris, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Estates Theater in Prague—these glass pendants by Jan Plechac & Henry Wielgus capture the nostalgia of the performance venues in a modern new way. PRAHA These chandeliers were modelled after a set of pendant lights by Czech glass artist Stanislav Libensky, for the now defunct Hotel Praha in Prague in the 1980s. The mesmerising light fixture uses glass pieces of varying thickness to create an interesting play of light and shadow. HIGHLIGHTS MADE IN ITALY First conceived as a showcase of Italian design, the latest edition of Salone del Mobile is still the best place to discover the comprehensive body of work by design stalwarts such as Molteni&C, B&B Italia, Giorgetti, Moroso, Porada, Poliform and Minotti, all of who displayed an insatiable appetite for innovation. Giorgetti expanded its range to include a new outdoor collection that debuted at the fair, while Molteni&C unveiled its new flagship store in Milan, designed by creative director Vincent Van Duysen. Visionnaire and Giorgio Collection took a more tempered direction to the classic opulence that characterise their labels, while Potocco, one of the first Italian brands to participate in the fair, strengthened its communications as it expands its operations worldwide. With its quadrilateral roof and stark lines, this modern abode instantly stands out among its more conventional neighbours along Crescent Road. This newly built bungalow is home to a young family of four, who recently welcomed a new baby to their household. The homeowners, a married couple who work in the finance industry, had first approached Kelvin Bing of Renaissance Planners & Designers to build and integrate a swimming pool into their previous home. “The homeowner had originally wanted to extend his original bungalow house with a new pool area, but I said it wasn’t possible because of building restrictions,” explains the project and design director. Set in a tranquil oasis of scented pines, swaying palms and perfumed orange blossoms, Can Mimosa (named for its large mimosa trees) is a rare jewel on Ibiza—an island known more for its sybaritic lifestyle than for its tranquil refuge. “The energy of the place is truly magical,” says Caroline Legrand of her island abode. “When I meditate, I feel deeply grateful that I am custodian of this little piece of paradise. I feel a deep connection with nature and the earth here. Time flies when you’re having fun—and judging by how fast the past 12 months went for Vincent Van Duysen, creative director of Molteni&C | Dada, there’s no doubt that the partnership between the Italian brand and the Belgian architect was a match made in design heaven. “It was very intense,” he says. “The year went by quickly, but I guess that’s what happens when you gather extremely motivated and talented people towards one goal.” Based in Antwerp, Van Duysen admits he’s always had a soft spot for Italy, and started collaborating with people and brands in Milan early on in his career. “I learned the Italian way of living as a young architect; everything here is dedicated to beauty and I admire that. For Konstantin Grcic, creation is defined by a careful process of addition as opposed to subtraction. The designer’s works marry an industrial aesthetic with experimental elements; they’re the result of in-depth investigations of materials, technologies and production processes, as well as the relationship between human beings and objects. At his Hieronymus exhibition at Galerie Kreo in Paris last year, he displayed spatial furniture that users could physically enter, expanding the concept of what furniture can be. “I’m interested in exploring a new grammar: the culture of objects and furniture and how it relates to changes in society,” he says. “With society changing so much today, we can find new typologies and ways of making furniture. During Europe’s Renaissance, Bohemia—the largest, westernmost region in what is today the Czech Republic—became famous for its beautiful, decorative glassware. Home to copious amounts of minerals such as limestone and silica, Bohemia developed a strong glass production industry, and its glass workers discovered that by combing potash with chalk, they could create a clear, colourless glass that was sturdier and of higher quality than glass made in Italy. The term “Bohemian crystal” was coined sometime in the 16th century to distinguish this superior “crystalline” glass—which, unlike regular glass, is assumed to contain no lead—from glass produced in other parts of the world. By the 19th century, there were many expert glass craftsmen in Bohemia and the region developed a glassmaking school system that maintained rigorous traditional standards while exploring new…

It was like finding a secret. Tucked behind a main street along a cobblestone path was the entrance to Fritz Hotel. I was greeted by a reception area, then walked through a bar and cafe, and finally reached an airy lobby furnished with pieces from the iconic Danish brand. “All that’s missing are the rooms,” says Hayon and laughs; he curated the exhibition, which is reassuringly more casual than conceptual. “The idea was to create a space for people to engage with the pieces and see them in context.” The award-winning Spanish designer, known for his knack of mixing humour and high design, along with his affinity for colour, is a long-time collaborator with the Republic of Fritz Hansen.
