TRANSPORT R1.1bn relief for taxi operators for Covid-19 TRANSPORT Minister Fikile Mbalula said the taxi industry would receive relief funding of R1.135 billion to help cushion the economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Mbalula announced the relief yesterday following a meeting with the taxi industry. He said each taxi owner would be allocated R5000. The minister said it would be a once-off payment. “The R5000 per taxi is once-off. It cannot be calculated for the entire duration of the lockdown,” he said, adding, “R1.135 billion has been set aside for the taxi industry. City offices, clinics, closed for Covid-19 A NUMBER of city offices and clinics had to close temporarily this week after staff tested positive for coronavirus. Tshwane House – the municipal headquarters – closed on Monday and reopened yesterday, while the metro offices in Mamelodi and the Silverton fire station also closed. Lebogang Mahaye, administrator responsible for compliance, said the fire station would be reopened on Tuesday with the other office. Three clinics which were also closed, Silverton, Folang and Rosslyn, are due to reopen on Monday. “As cases come up, we immediately implement our protocols to isolate, test, decontaminate, trace, etc.” she said. The pregnant 28-year-old was stabbed and strung up in a tree in the latest spate of gender-based killings. Hefty fines, jail for not wearing masks CAPE TOWN: Ghanaian residents who fail to wear masks as a preventive measure against the transmission of Covid-19 will be fined up to GH₵ 60 000 (about R179000) or face a maximum of 10 years’ imprisonment. According to the GhanaWeb news site, President Nana Akufo-Addo signed an executive instrument criminalising the failure to wear masks which completely cover both the nose and mouth in public places.
