It wasn’t that long ago that Prince Charles, as he was then, landed on our shores to open the Gold Coast’s Commonwealth Games, but six years since that trip, so much has changed... This time, when Charles visits, he will be a changed man, having experienced so many of life’s challenges in such a short time. In 2022 he farewelled his mother and took over the throne; then, just two years later, the new King announced that he was battling cancer. And, while some might have doubted his ability to take on the role of monarch, one thing is certain – Charles has shown great strength and resilience. BIRTHDAY UPS & DOWNS When Prince Harry turned 40 on 15 September, the day seemed to start off promisingly enough. For the first time in three years Buckingham Palace wished him a happy birthday on social media – complete with cake emoji. This was swiftly followed, in almost identical words, by a birthday message from the account of Prince William and Princess Catherine. Ten years ago, for his 30th birthday, a party was thrown for Harry at his father’s home, Clarence House. William organised the big bash, inviting 30 of Harry’s best friends and creating a menu of his brother’s favourite foods. It might be just six years since Charles last set foot Down Under, but there have been some monumental changes in his life – the least of which being that he is now King! So, it will be a history-making event when the monarch lands in Australia this month, with Queen Camilla at his side. Arriving late on 18 October, their Majesties will conclude the visit on 23 October, when they head to Samoa. There, Charles will attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
