CANDY CRITTER It took five cotton candy machines and 14 boxes of special sugar to break this sweet record. Designed to look like a rabbit, the world’s largest cotton candy sculpture stretched over eight feet long and weighed 37 pounds. Later, the artists passed out samples of their creation. Free cotton candy treats? We’re all ears. VERY HAIRY PIG It’s easy to confuse this furry swine for a sheep. With its ringlets of blond, black, or red hair, the woolly looking Hungarian breed called Mangalica holds the record for the world’s hairiest domestic pig. That’s something to baa, er, squeal about. LONG SHOT He shoots, he scores! Joshua Walker sunk a ball from 56 feet away to snag the record for the farthest behind-the-back basketball shot. (That’s longer than a school…
1 Most tornadoes in the Northern Hemisphere spin counterclockwise; most Southern Hemisphere twisters spin clockwise. 2 One study found that the average person will walk about 75,000 miles over a lifetime—enough to circle the Earth 3 times. 3 Lava from a volcano in Africa flowed as fast as a car driving on the highway. 4 The earliest cars had top speeds of 10 miles an hour—a little faster than a chicken can run. 5 Some trains in Asia use magnets to move without touching the ground. 6 Some chameleons’ tongues can snag a bug 5 times faster than you can blink.…

COMEBACK CRITTER: Scottish Wildcats Cairngorms National Park, Scotland A nine-month-old Scottish wildcat hears a squeal that sounds like a hare in distress. Dinner! The cat slowly approaches the sound: an audio recording in a food-filled box. But before the captive-born wildcat can snag its meal, the box snaps shut. The animal is learning that it must move faster to catch a meal if it’s going to survive in the wild. These felines disappeared across Great Britain after years of hunting and habitat loss. But last year, scientists raised and released 19 cats, with more on the way. “If we hadn’t started the program, wildcats would likely be gone from the wild,” conservationist Helena Parsons says. Today, hunting these cats is illegal, and they’re doing well in a protected area. Camera traps reveal…
Two spotted hyena cubs crouch in the tall grasses of Kenya’s Masai Mara National Reserve when—pounce! Their tiny paws smack their sleeping mom as they playfully nibble her neck. The mama slowly opens her eyes and then gently licks the two cubs clean. The spotted hyena is one of the African savanna’s most fearsome predators. They team up to hunt zebras, wildebeests, and gazelles with bite forces that can crush two-and-a-half-inch-thick bones. And the females are larger, stronger, and more aggressive than the males of the species—they have to be to protect their cubs. But female hyenas are also gentle with their youngsters and care for them longer than any other African predator. That’s part of what makes them supermoms. “Spotted hyena moms are just fabulous,” says Kay Holekamp, a…
