Mystery mollusc named! Scientists were confused when they spotted this weird deep-sea creature way back in February 2000 – nicknaming it the ‘mystery mollusc’. But now, after almost 25 years of research, they have finally identified the strange swimmer as the world’s first deep-sea nudibranch (a type of sea slug)! Found by a remotely operated vehicle almost 2,600m deep in the Pacific Ocean, the transparent glow-in-the-dark creature was like nothing the team had seen before. Determined to learn more, they tracked down another 156 individuals and, after analysing DNA, were able to work out it was a type of nudibranch, naming it Bathydevius caudactylus. Cool! It sits on an island in the River Seine in Paris and features beautiful stained-glass windows, elaborate stone carvings and a huge spire reaching almost 100m tall! 2 In 1831, the cathedral featured in French author Victor Hugo‘s classic story The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. The book has since been turned into many films, including a Disney musical, helping Notre-Dame become iconic! 3 In April 2019, tragedy struck when a huge fire destroyed most of Notre-Dame’s roof and spire. But after a five-year restoration project costing around 700 million euros, the cathedral finally reopened its doors on 7 December 2024! A cathedral is a very large church where…
