Hi Kids! This month's mag has some of my favourite creatures on the cover - fluffy emperor penguin chicks! Find out all about these cute-but-tough birds on page 8 and then, on page 30, discover the science behind why adorable animals like them make us feel all gooey inside! Also this issue, we learn about the life of an ancient Chinese admiral who explored the world, and we time-travel back 66 million years to see why the dinosaurs went extinct. There are lots of cool competitions for you to enter this month, plus puzzles, facts and funny photos to share with your friends. Enjoy the mag – see you next month!…
Sunken treasure discovered! A vast haul of coins from a 310-year-old shipwreck has been discovered by divers exploring the warm seas off Florida, USA! When a fleet of 12 Spanish ships was hit by a devastating hurricane in the summer of 1715, all but one of them ended up at the bottom of the ocean - along with the valuable cargo they were transporting back to Spain. But the treasure wasn't lost forever. This summer, explorers retrieved over 1,000 silver coins called reales from the haul, along with five gold coins called escudos. The coins were probably made in Mexico, Peru and Bolivia, which were ruled by Spain at the time. Along with other gold artefacts they discovered, the divers’ treasure has been valued at over £740,000. What a find! Vultures…
Buzzy retreats! Have you ever made a ‘bee hotel’ for solitary bees to nest and lay their eggs in? Well, check out these luxury versions! The Swiss tourist board have built a collection of, er, swish insect retreats that look like miniature versions of real hotels around the nation. Bee-rilliant! Daring drop! Brazilian skateboarder Sandro Dias made history in September when he ‘dropped’* from a 22-storey building! The 50-year-old started 70m above the ground, and then hurtled down the world's largest skate ramp at 103kmph, before leaping into a wall of 1,800 foam cubes. Gnarly! *A ‘drop’ is when a skater starts riding by placing the tail of their board on the edge of a ramp, leaning forwards onto all four wheels on the downward slope to gain speed. Fabric fish…
“Emperor penguins are loud! That was the first thing I noticed when National Geographic sent me to live alongside a colony in Antarctica for a TV documentary. I had to get used to a lot of squawking, whistling and honking, especially when I was trying to sleep in my tent. “At first, the penguins appeared clumsy and, well, not so bright. But I soon learned that it was a mistake to assume they aren't tough or smart. These birds – not just emperors, but many of the 18 species of penguins – thrive in some of Earth's harshest environments. They can dive over 300m deep, survive in below-freezing temperatures and withstand 160kmph winds. And they don't do it alone. They form some of the strongest relationships in the animal kingdom.…
Modern penguins’ ancestors once flew, but over time their wings evolved to become rigid, like flippers, better suited for swimming. Here's how these birds are built for ‘flying’ through the ocean instead of soaring through the sky……
Why do you like penguins? Mya, 11 On one hand they are goofy, clumsy and funny, but on the other hand, they can survive in the harshest conditions on Earth – whether that's minus 50°C temperatures or swimming down to over 500m, the deepest dive of any bird! What's your favourite type of penguin? Sadhbh, 11 Easy – macaroni penguins! These birds weren't named after pasta. They were actually named because they reminded British explorers of ‘fashionistas’ back home! In London during the late 18th century, a group of young, male aristocrats called ‘macaronis’ were known for wearing fancy headgear, including yellow feathers in their hats. When the explorers saw the penguins’ yellow crests, they named them after the style! How do you get so close without them running away? Sofia,…
