Kids discover T. rex! Who said family walks were boring?! Well, brothers Jessin and Liam Fisher, and their cousin Kaiden, discovered a T. rex fossil in July 2022 while hiking near their home in North Dakota, USA! The boys, then aged 11, eight and ten, were in the area’s so-called ‘Badlands’ when they spotted a legbone poking out of the dry, dusty earth. They reported their discovery to their dad’s friend, palaeontologist Dr. Tyler Lyson, who unearthed more of the T. rex’s bones, including fearsome paintbrush-sized teeth. On closer inspection, the experts realised that the bones probably belonged to a teenage T. rex! Its tibia (shin bone) measured just 82cm, 30cm shorter than an adult’s. That makes the 66-million-year-old dino one of just a handful of teen T. rex skeletons ever…

Just walking in a park or looking out of a window at a green space can boost focus and even help you do better at school. Wow! 2 In Europe, three in four people live in an urban area, where roads and buildings take up more space than nature. Fortunately, many towns and cities also contain parks, gardens and playgrounds, where grass and trees grow. 3 However, communities with green space are often expensive – so not everyone can afford to live in them. Last year’s survey counted a whopping 1.5 million butterflies and dayflying moths. How many will be spotted this year?! Do you love butterflies? Then join the Butterfly Conservation charity’s Big Butterfly Count event this summer! Simply spend 15 minutes counting butterflies during sunny weather and make a note of the different species you spot. Before you start, ask a grown-up to visit the Butterfly Conservation website and download their identification guide or the survey’s free mobile app. Then submit your records online when you’re done. Your report will appear on the site’s interactive map – and you can see what other spotters have been up to nearby! The results will help researchers monitor and protect these beautiful insects. Match master Sculptor Len Hughes makes models out of matchsticks! Len, 89, from Queensland, Australia, has been painstakingly crafting animals, vehicles and even buildings out of the thin wooden strips for the last 60 years. This model of the Taj Mahal in India is our fave! Beastly bricks! Twenty-five life-sized LEGO creatures will be hanging out at Edinburgh Zoo in Scotland until the end of July.
