San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet) returned to the stage with thirty-three performances of Helgi Tomasson’s Nutcracker, a Bay Area tradition of the past eighteen years. This year’s performances featured the complete roster of 110 SF Ballet School children dancing across the casts—returning to pre-pandemic levels—as bugs, soldiers, mice, and partygoers, returning in full following last year’s condensed number of 64 children. “This is a most joyous return to the stage for our students, many of whom have missed their favorite holiday tradition over the past three years,” says SF Ballet School Director Patrick Armand. “Nutcracker offers an invaluable opportunity to prepare a dancer for their career, to instill professional values and rigor in a supportive and fun environment—we are thrilled to be back.” Nutcracker also offered audiences the chance to…
Betty was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area in a traditional first-generation Chinese American household. Her mother immigrated to the United States from Taiwan in her early 20s, and although her father was born in America, he spent his formative years in Taiwan before returning in his early 20s. Like most immigrant stories, Betty’s parents sought greener pastures, hoping to achieve the American dream. “My parents acknowledged the endless possibilities America offered, and they were able to meet their goals through hard work and dedication. They always read American and Chinese newspapers daily, and my grandfather used to study the dictionary to learn and improve his English. My parents emphasized the value of education, and I made learning and schoolwork a priority,” she shares. When Betty was…
“Beauty and art have no boundaries, it is a global language. The East and West may have a different interpretation, but the goal is universal—to bring happiness and expression to as many people around the world as possible, to share the beauty and pass along a sense of positive energy to everyone, and to add a touch of color to this world,” she conveys with passion. Victoria was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her childhood dream was to be a businesswoman, following in her parents’ footsteps. At a very young age, Victoria trotted around the globe with her parents and experienced first-hand various cultures, cuisines, and art. With Europe being her favorite continent, Victoria encountered a significant experience that left a remarkable impression on her. “When I…
At the age of nine, Sabah Mansoor was already an apprentice and a keen observer, eager to learn from generations of potters. Their days blended together in the same rhythm–mixing, cutting, molding, and shaping damp terracotta into practical vessels and decorative forms. She liked the earthen smell of clay and mud, taken straight from the Deccan plateau where Bangalore sits. She liked the cool, weighted material in her hands and the tactile experiences of creating. Her city, like many others in India, is host to artisans and craftspeople whose work becomes synonymous with specific neighborhoods. Such is the case for Bangalore’s “Pottery Town,” one of the enclaves nestled near the city’s winding “Pottery Road.” Stepping into this world of pottery and clay for weekend apprenticeships was one of Sabah’s joys…
The Triton Museum of Art, which showcases art and artists of California, had a one-woman exhibition of Silvia Poloto’s works in 2012. Chief Curator Preston Metcalf states, “While Poloto does work in California, her work transcends any boundaries. Her work is expressed in the articulate rush of information from the artist. Silvia’s art is an expression of the many layers of memory, culture ideas, and ideals that make up the psyche of an artist. And this very psyche is what ignites response in people here or in Brazil or Jordan. What we and others experience in absorbing Silvia’s message is that her experiences are our experiences, her memories are our memories, her sense of connection, and through her art, she is we.” Silvia Poloto: “My existence has been defined by…
275 guests dined on the War Memorial Opera House stage, surrounded by the set of acclaimed, new production of Verdi’s La Traviata San Francisco Opera Guild President Maryam Muduroglu, whom San Francisco Mayor London N. Breed just announced as the city new Chief of Protocol, noted: “Music and art can have transformative influences in the lives of children. Self-expression, empathy, self-esteem, collaboration, global curiosity, compassion, critical thinking, and sense of purpose, these are all the life-long skills we strive to foster in the thousands of students we reach every year throughout the greater Bay Area.” Frederica von Stade continues to be one of the music world’s most beloved figures. Known by her nickname as FLICKA, the mezzosoprano has enriched the world of classical music for over five decades. Her long…
