Modernism presented a retrospective of the Russian Avant-Garde in 1980, before any other West Coast gallery or museum showed the historically important work of Russian Avant-Garde artists. In 1982, the gallery staged the first Bay Area exhibition of Andy Warhol. Both abstraction and figuration have been central to the gallery program ever since. In addition to 17 more Russian Avant-Garde exhibitions, Modernism…

A Director Who Knows How To Get The Message Out Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, “Ramses the Great and the Gold of the Pharaohs reveals the power and splendor of ancient Egypt, and expands on the history conveyed within our own collection of ancient art. Once the exhibition completes its international tour, these objects will return to Egyptian museums and will likely not travel again for decades.” I have been a long-time fan and supporter of FAM’s Director, Tom Campbell, on many levels, not the least of which he is a brilliant communicator in this digital age. His insightful and informative social media posts reach over 40,000 people on Instagram alone. No, this is not an ad for Instagram. He is…
Heide VanDoren Betz: Tell us a bit about your background, your upbringing. Holly Baxter: My parents–my father a physician and mother a homemaker–collected modern art. I was always fascinated by the artworks in our home. I loved walking around just looking. We, my parents and younger sister, were frequent visitors to the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, where I grew up. The works in the Nelson Atkins made a great impression on me at an early age. HVDB: Did you have favorite works of art as a child? HB: Yes, I fell in love with the drama of Baroque paintings, especially Caravaggio, his painting of Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness stands out; it is considered a masterpiece and is one of the museum’s greatest…
