On June 19, 1865, America took a step by allowing enslaved Africans the chance to live in normalcy. Major General Gordon Granger came to Galveston after the Civil War to head the District of Texas, declaring the abolition of slavery. But it wasn’t until years after that the Emancipation Proclamation enforced the real freedoms enslaved Africans sought. One can argue that July 4, 1776, isn’t the true independence day of the United States since all its citizens weren’t free. But then again, Africans were considered property, making a case for the opposing side. With the 13th Amendment not coming into effect until December of 1865, many enslaved had to wait months later until they could experience freedom.
