LAND Rover doesn’t like using the c-word anymore. No, not that one. I am referring to the Camel Trophy, of course, the off-roading Olympics which ran from 1980 until 2000. An annual event that took more than 500 amateur adventurers from 35 countries on the Land Rover ride of their lives. For two decades participants took their distinctive Sandglow Land Rovers through seemingly impenetrable forests and up impassable mountain tracks. It was an event that won the hearts and minds of wannabe adventurers and 4x4 enthusiasts the world over. Then enter the PC police and suddenly smoking (sponsor Camel was a cigarette brand and not an animal with two humps) and bashing through virgin forests were not deemed to be cool anymore. THIS beautiful 1949 Series I 80in is rather special. Chassis number R8667261 is the first of a batch of 1878 Land Rovers ordered on 2 May 1949, by the War Department, in what was actually the first large-scale order by the British military for Rover’s new off-road vehicle. It was given the military registration number 00BC01. In June 1948, just weeks after the launch of the Land Rover at the Amsterdam Motor Show, Rover had loaned two pre-production demonstrators, L29 and R30, to the Ministry of Supply for evaluation and assessment. They were delivered to the FVDE (Fighting Vehicle Development Establishment) at Chertsey, Surrey, for extensive military field trials. Upon completion of the trials, the vehicles were returned to Rover and eventually sold to civilian buyers, and both survive today…

The quality parts for Land Rovers THIS 2015 Range Rover Sport with just 55,000 miles on the clock failed an MoT because of corrosion of the steel pipe in the centre of the rear brake hose assembly on one side of the car (the hose on the opposite side passed okay). THE Darien Gap breakthrough, part of the 1972 pan-Americas expedition undertaken in two new Range Rovers, is still a legendary motor journey. When I interviewed Darien Gap expedition leader Colonel John Blashford-Snell (JBS) for LRM, he mentioned there was a 50-year anniversary reunion in the planning. My request to attend was approved, and that day has arrived. For a 50-year anniversary of an expedition that involved over 100 people, managing to bring together 18 in a Dorset country pub is a significant accomplishment, and perhaps testament to the resilient types who originally signed up for the adventure. The quality parts for Land Rovers Centring the steering wheel I need to centre the steering wheel on my 1994 Defender Tdi. I have tried to take the steering wheel off but, after removing the nut, it doesn’t look a simple as my Series III did, and it won’t pull off. There’s also a circular piece of metal under the nut; how does this come off? THE Lake District Land Rover Meet is exactly that: a gathering of like-minded Land Rover enthusiasts in the Lake District. Pre-Covid I joined them at the Lakeland Motor Museum; this July the Meet was at the Threlkeld Quarry and Mining Museum, the third time it has taken place there. The Mining Museum – just off the A66 near Keswick – is somewhere I’ve passed so many times but never visited, so it was the perfect excuse to check out the quarry, catch up with members of the group and spend a few days in the Lakes. MANY years ago, I purchased a Defender 90 200Tdi County Hard Top. I was attracted to the Land Rover because it was red and had reasonably low mileage at 82,000 miles. It was also a one-owner farm vehicle, although the body panels were not too badly abused. The main problem with the Defender was advanced corrosion underneath – the chassis was badly rusted and a brake pipe fractured (because of rust) on the test drive! The vendor was none too impressed but forgot about it when I agreed to purchase the Land Rover. It was so long ago, I don’t even remember what I paid for it (c2004). A contemporary diesel engine relies on high-pressure injector technology, and the Puma engine is no different. This Ford in-line four-pot diesel originated in the Duratorq TDCi for the Ford Transit, but it was used by several other manufacturers, including Land Rover in the Defender from 2007. The 2.4 and 2.2-litre Defender TDCi (Puma) variants both use common rail fuelling technology which operates at incredible pressures: up to 1800 bar (that’s 26,460 psi) at the injector. That high pressure and the way the fuel is controlled helps reduce noise, emissions and fuel consumption, whilst increasing performance. However, those benefits rely on a fully- and efficiently-functioning injection system.
