THE phrase “don’t call us, we’ll call you” is echoing around my head, as I have now been waiting weeks for a call back from a certain garage which had previously agreed to rebuild the Lightweight’s carburettor. I have called so many times it’s actually embarrassing. I can’t call again and I’m no longer really expecting a call back. I have been working on old Land Rovers for a good few years now, but I’m still learning, and I don’t always get things right first time. The vehicles I work on can be 50 or 60-years old, have usually had a hard life as working vehicles and will often have had newer parts substituted at various times, or had repairs improvised using parts from completely different vehicles. The potential for making mistakes is rather greater than it would be on a five-year-old Ford. Having said which, I don’t often have vehicles come back for rectification after they have been in my workshop. To find our favourite insurer, we needed to hit the keyboard and the phones to uncover the best quote. Recognising that few of us actually enjoy listening to hold music or talking to a call centre, we always used an online quote facility first, if it was offered. This allows you to get prices while sitting in front of the telly at night, or at least helps speed up the calls by entering the details quickly. I cannot believe my Defender is nearly 25 years old – I like to think that it doesn’t look a quarter of a century old. That means in 2023 it will be exportable to the US. My Defender 110 2.8i left the UK on 4 December 1997, as a CKD kit supplied by Land Rover UK. It was then assembled during the fifirst half of 1998 at the Land Rover facility in the Transvaal, before being sent out to a Land Rover franchised dealer. That dealer was Peter Geldenhuys (I know the chap) of Forsdicks Landrover (that is how they spell Land Rover in South Africa) in Kloof Street, Cape Town. Bon voyage WHEN I’ve finished writing this intro to the Tech section I’ll be setting off for a 2000-mile trip to and around France in my 16-year-old Range Rover Sport with 150,000 miles on the clock. AT an altitude that most of us only experience in a plane or a skyscraper, Albert Selway – Albie, as he’s universally known – swings nonchalantly on a rope between two sections of tree trunk, an idling chainsaw swinging from his tool belt. He looks across to the trunk he’s just departed, assesses where to cut next, then sails gracefully back across the void. I sadly haven’t had too much time to do many Land Rover-related things for the past year, with moving and getting set up in North Devon taking priority. STRICTLY speaking, what we call the bumper is actually the bumper cover, and the bumper is the structural section behind it. But we’ll go with bumper. Bumper removal is an easy, if long-winded, task and there’s a good chance of damaging some of the many plastic clips and plugs, so it may be worth buying a few spares before starting. Care needs to be taken with the hidden wiring harnesses to avoid damage, strain, and entrapment when reassembling. Two Defender ads are banned Two adverts for Land Rover Defenders have been banned after misleading customers that parking sensors would warn drivers of an approaching cliff edge. Three Land Rover Defenders can be seen in the advert (a version of which is still available to watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=44&v=MCte8uLfPFQ&feature=emb_imp_woyt) going through a series of extreme off-road challenges, including backing the vehicles into a cliff edge parking spot. In response to the two viewers who complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) saying the adverts were misleading, in that the sensors would warn of objects behind the car, not an empty space, Jaguar Land Rover said wide shots of the vehicle ‘clearly showed it was reversing towards a boulder’. IT’S been quite a while since I wrote about JLR in this column. In fact, my most recent comments on the company were in relation to the resignation of Group Engineering boss, Nick Rogers, at the end of last year. As you will remember, the story broke when Auto Express spotted a post on Nick’s personal LinkedIn account. It used to be marketed as offering better fuel economy. Quite apart from the fact that replacing a worn-out carburettor with a brand new one will always give you better economy, the Weber was a fair bit smaller than the original Land Rover carburettors and I suspect that most of the economy gains came from the engine being slightly strangled. THOSE of us who have been involved with heavy towing using a Land Rover Defender – or any vehicle for that matter – will be aware of the perils of towing a very heavy load, or an incorrectly loaded trailer. I recently had to tow such a load – one that was both heavy and far from ideal with the nose weight of the tow bar – using my Defender 90 Td5. The nose weight of a trailer or caravan is the force (kg) applied to the tow ball of the towing vehicle, recommended to be between 8 and 12 per cent of the trailer.
