Two Defender ads are banned Two adverts for Land Rover Defenders have been banned after misleading customers that parking sensors would warn drivers of an approaching cliff edge. Three Land Rover Defenders can be seen in the advert (a version of which is still available to watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=44&v=MCte8uLfPFQ&feature=emb_imp_woyt) going through a series of extreme off-road challenges, including backing the vehicles into a cliff edge parking spot. In response to the two viewers who complained to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) saying the adverts were misleading, in that the sensors would warn of objects behind the car, not an empty space, Jaguar Land Rover said wide shots of the vehicle ‘clearly showed it was reversing towards a boulder’. Well, they’re both pretty cool for starters, and both have enjoyed a long career in the British military. In fact, the Boeing Chinook is one of the RAF’s longest serving aircraft – a camouflaged workhorse for the past 40 years – and it has now inspired a unique commemorative Defender. Automotive engineering specialist Tecniq has honoured the Chinook’s 40th anniversary with a specially commissioned Q40 Defender which will be auctioned at the Goodwood Revival this September, with all proceeds from the Bonhams sale being donated to the Royal Air Forces Association. I recently discovered one of my Rover 80s is still road-legal and going along.
