WITH the 2030 net zero target looming closer every day, manufacturers have found themselves in a race to produce cars with little or no emissions at the tailpipe. Obviously a full transition to electric vehicles will play a big part in meeting climate goals, but hydrogen also has a role to play in the future powertrain mix. While we think it’s a better solution for heavy vehicles such as buses and lorries rather than personal transport, Land Rover has other ideas. Based on the new Defender, the brand has developed a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) and testing is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2021 in the UK to verify key attributes. I must be the only Land Rover owner who doesn’t give his vehicles nicknames. My Ninety is known as “the Ninety”. It’s been the same story with every car and motorbike I’ve ever owned. I’ve called the more troublesome ones a few choice names over the years–none suitable for repeating in a family magazine – but inanimate objects don’t get names in my book. Children and pets get names, but only so I don’t get them confused with one another. I know some folk derive their vehicles’ names from the registration numbers. You know, SUS 4N becomes “Susan”, etc. But I can’t recall ever owning a vehicle whose number plate bore a sequence of letters that suggested an obvious name. I think last month I mentioned I have a new wiring loom for my 109. I had the best intentions to get it fitted but alas I have not quite found the time. In part the delay is because I have decided to take the opportunity to tidy up the engine bay when I take out all the old wiring. But the big question is, what colour should I paint her? She’s currently pastel green (mostly) and when I bought her she was ‘Camino Gold’ which is very common over here (I’m not sure it was ever an option in the UK, much like Marine Blue was never an option here in Australia). DURING lockdown I decided that the rest of my life will is be all about experiences. I want to rack up as many memorable ones as humanly possible. Those that know me well will concur that the majority of these experiences normally involve a Land Rover. Some, like jumping out of a perfectly working plane or rafting down grade 5 rapids, have absolutely nothing to do with Land Rovers. One could argue that you need a Land Rover to get to the river or the airport. I’m surrounded by Land Rovers and classic cars where I live. I obviously have good neighbours. Most diesels, including the 2.7-litre TDV6, have a vacuum pump to generate vacuum in the brake servo which sits between the brake pedal and the brake master cylinder. The vacuum assistance reduces the effort required to press the brake pedal when applying the brakes, making braking easier and more effective. The servo (also called a booster) rarely fails. When it does, it’s often the diaphragm inside the servo that cracks and allows air to bypass the seal, reducing the vacuum and thus the force applied to the brake system when the pedal is pressed. The servo can also rust through, allowing the vacuum to fail as air leaks in. The results are the same: poor braking, a hard pedal and increased stopping distance. I don’t think there is another show in the UK that has been plagued by worse weather in the past. Previously the organiser Tom McGuigan hosted both a spring and autumn event but due to lockdown he was forced to move the spring event to the first weekend in June. That proved to be a masterstroke as the weather was similar to that in the south of France during the height of summer! RICHARD HALL bought his first Land Rover, a Series III, just after his 18th birthday and has since owned, maintained and restored these vehicles for over 30 years now. He runs a small Land Rover repair and restoration business in Norfolk and every month he lets off steam in LRM. I have always felt it was a shame that Land Rover did not manage to sell more Ninetys and One Tens with the 2.5 litre petrol engine. The 17H was the final development of a line of overhead valve all-iron four-cylinder petrol engines which had started back in 1958 with the launch of the Series. THE Freelander was the most car-like of all Land Rovers at launch – and remained so until the Range Rover family expanded from 2005 onwards with the Sport, Evoque and Velar models. Monocoque body with independent suspension means it’s great for chucking around corners on twisty roads – and the 2003 Sport special edition with ride height lowered 30 mm (and go-faster stripes) is better for this job (although the rare but rapid V6 petrol is, arguably, the best fun of all). IN the past month or two I have spent a lot of time driving new Land Rovers including two weeks with this 2021 Defender 110 D250 S. Don’t worry my old 110 has not been sold and it will always be in my fleet. MAINTAINING the correct valve or tappet clearance helps to keep the engine running efficiently, with less clatter, and increases the longevity of critical components. Valves are operated by lobes on the camshaft, which action the valve rocker arms, usually via push rods. As the camshaft raises one side of the rocker arm, the opposing side lowers, opening the valve by pushing down on the valve stem. Within that mechanism is a set amount of free play (or lash) – usually measured with the engine cold – between the rocker arm and the top of the valve stem. It’s designed to provide a working clearance while also accommodating the expansion caused when the engine reaches operating temperature. For the engine to run well, the correct clearance gap is vital. Too narrow,…

According to industry pundits, there’s a shortage of nearly-new motors because nobody was buying new ones last year due to COVID lockdown, while new ones are in short supply because of unavailability of components, again caused by COVID. Yet a scan of local forecourts, the internet and LRM classified ads indicates there are plenty of Land Rovers, old and new, for sale out there. THE Fella has washed his Discovery 3, inside and out, somewhat transforming the vehicle to look as tidy as comparable models currently on the roads, which previously always seemed to look much better than his. It is good timing, coinciding with a lift in the appalling weather that the month of May lavished upon us and the further easing of lockdown restrictions. THE Norfolk Garage doesn’t usually work on Td5s. It is a lovely engine when running well but has absolutely nothing in common with the pre-1998 engines, needs a number of special tools and has its own set of vices and foibles which would take years of experience to learn. AFTER our Td5 Defender’s body has been safely landed on the newly built-up rolling chassis, it would seem logical to have a set plan on how to go about bolting the body to the chassis, connecting up all of the electrics and reinstating the fluid systems, such as fuel and brakes. However, in practice I have found that there tends to be a fair bit of jumping around. For example, one might have decided to concentrate on fitting out the engine bay as a particular set of tasks for that morning’s work. As luck would have it I had just sold my previous Defender (that I also had rebuilt) and so I had some free funds for another project.
