WITH the 2030 net zero target looming closer every day, manufacturers have found themselves in a race to produce cars with little or no emissions at the tailpipe. Obviously a full transition to electric vehicles will play a big part in meeting climate goals, but hydrogen also has a role to play in the future powertrain mix. While we think it’s a better solution for heavy vehicles such as buses and lorries rather than personal transport, Land Rover has other ideas. Based on the new Defender, the brand has developed a prototype hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) and testing is scheduled to begin towards the end of 2021 in the UK to verify key attributes. A fleet of Defender 110s is set to transport athletes, medical crew and support staff over 1238 km of alpine terrain as 32 competitors combine hiking, ultra-running, mountaineering and paragliding in a true test of human endurance and stamina. Otherwise known as the Red Bull X-Alps 2021, the Defenders will be a home-from-home for participants, who after hiking over 50 km a day up vertical ascents as high as 5000 m, will be very grateful for their bespoke Autohome roof tent. TWISTED Automotive, Land Rover Defender modification specialists, has opened its first showroom in London just as it celebrates 21 years in business. The property at Radley Mews in Kensington includes a commission space where clients can work with the team to create their own fully bespoke vehicle. A selection of the limited edition, re-engineered Twisted vehicles will also be at the 1200 sq ft showroom for clients to view and test drive by appointment. The range includes the Twisted Commissioned, Defined and Certified collections, with prices from £75,000 to a whopping £350,000 (plus Vat).
