JAGUAR Land Rover employee and former solider Mike Burton walked 11 km a day for 11 days wearing an 11 kg weighted vest to raise money for two Armed Forces charities. Mike, who served in the Royal Lancers regiment for 15 years before joining JLR, took on the challenge after discovering so many ex-services’ charities were struggling for funds because of the coronavirus pandemic. His challenge began on November 1 and ended on November 11 – Armistice Day. As Mike was at work during most of the challenge, he wore the equivalent of a combat armour suit during his shifts to walk the bulk of his 11 km daily target. THE finalists for the 2020 Royal Automobile Club Historic Awards, which recognise outstanding achievements within the British historic motoring and motorsport world, have now been revealed, and we’re delighted to hear that two of the finalists in the eight categories are green oval related. LAND Rover Defenders (I’m talking the original here) are bought by people from all walks of life. And despite the fact that they are very basic, not particularly comfortable, slow, noisy and costly to run, they are practical with lots of body options to choose from and easy to maintain, but perhaps best of all they go anywhere. I recently organised the most unique gathering of Defenders ever to be held in the UK. It took place a week or two just before the November lockdown that has closed all nonessential shops and outlawed unnecessary travel. Back then we still had the rule of six. As luck would have it I could only find five owners of 2.8i Defenders that could make our exclusive little gathering. Add mine into the mix and suddenly the event was full up. For those that don’t know the 2.8i Defender was only sold in South Africa in the late 1990s and it has a BMW M52 petrol engine. THREAD quality is a matter of time and preservation – the better the thread the less time assembling or disassembling and, crucially, the better the preservation of potentially expensive components. If you’ve ever struggled to remove a seized fitting in an emergency without destroying it because it has to be refitted, you’ll appreciate being able to make good a poor thread before reassembly. For instance unique suspension bolts you hadn’t expected to remove and Series/Defender body panels’ captive nuts. Exposed corroded threads, seized fittings with corroded threads or freshly coated threads blocked with galv or paint will undermine and potentially weaken a fitting to the point where it could break, cross thread or seize. One way to avoid this is the use of taps and dies to restore thread integrity.…

THE winners of the Historic Motoring Awards 2020 in association with Octane magazine have been announced and the Car of the Year was none other than ‘Oxford’ battling it out against some of the most important cars in motoring history from prototypes and painstaking recreations to motorsport icons. If you stand back and take a look at the way that the vehicle was put together, it really is remarkable that it was made at all. FINALLY my Defender 130 project is in the paint shop and is nearing completion – or certainly getting to a point where I can make use of it on the road. I had made some major progress on the build-up of the chassis cab earlier during the first Lockdown, to the point where the Land Rover starts, drives and stops. You have a Series IIA called Henry, right? Four and half years ago, I bought a 1971 Series IIA as a restoration project (Henry). It’s only five months older than me; some might say it’s in better condition than me after recent and ongoing health challenges. I am happy to report that we finished Project Henry last year. Why make a trailer that looks like Henry? One night Lou, my beloved other half, who now can identify any Series Land Rover from 2000 metres away just by the smell of its exhaust, showed me something she had found on eBay. REMEMBER when they announced the pricing for the new Defender and Land Rover enthusiasts around the world accused Jaguar Land Rover of losing the plot? IN an effort to meet customers’ needs during lockdown, Jaguar Land Rover introduced an enhanced version of a complete online and remote ordering system which was first trialled in May 2019. Thanks to virtual showrooms and video tours customers were able to browse, build and order online from home and then given safe sanitised click-and-collect delivery options. This new approach to selling was expanded during the first lockdown, and now allows retailers to remain open for business, even while their doors are closed. In addition, phone and video sales appointments were available so that customers could talk directly to specialist consultants to answer questions and discuss specific needs. RICHARD HALL bought his first Land Rover, a Series III, just after his 18th birthday and has since owned, maintained and restored these vehicles for over 30 years now. Series IIA in for a service, and on removing the rear brake drums I found that one of the brake cylinders was leaking fluid past the seals. This is not unusual. IN the early days of LRM, a popular feature was Mike Manifold’s Country Garage – the fictional tale of a rural workshop and its imaginary customers. ‘Mike Manifold’, of course, was a pseudonym, and in 2014 when its real author decided to retire we searched for a replacement. That search ended at a real country garage, in Norfolk. For some time I had been following the compelling blog of Richard Hall, who ran a Land Rover workshop (Glencoyne Engineering) in Thetford. I offered him the job and he agreed. Real Richard replaced fictional Mike and Glencoyne became the Norfolk Garage, where the customers and their problems were genuine. LAND Rover clubs are famous for their family atmosphere – none more so than the Scottish Land Rover Owners Club, where David and Stephine Hunter, and their daughters Starr, Jazmyn and Harmony are always at the centre of the club’s many off-road events. ADDING a retro-fit tow hitch to the Discovery Sport requires the rear body structural impact beam armature (crossmember) to be replaced by a new towbar impact beam armature which supports the tow hitch mountings and uses the same body mounting points. The centre section of the rear valance is replaced with a new section supplied with the kit we’re using, which covers the fixed bolt-on tow bar mounting. A small section of the rear bumper needs to be cut to allow for the towbar, and the cut lines are pre-marked on the inside of the bumper. Then it’s a matter of installing your chosen electrics – usually the now standard 13-pin socket shown here.
