WE LAND Rover owners are a funny old bunch. I might forget the odd birthday, wedding anniversary or Land Rover day of significance but I will never forget the days we crossed the Makgadikgadi Pans of Botswana after an unseasonal downpour. It was only supposed to take us half a day but it took 48 hours and many recoveries to get the whole convoy of Land Rovers across. UNFORTUNATELY 4x4 cars and their drivers are often targeted by the press with negative comments. Whether it’s because people are lobbying for them to be penalised for being more harmful to the environment or for supposedly causing disturbance and destruction to the countryside when driving on unpaved roads – while in some cases there is justification with the odd few owner spoiling it for everyone else – there’s no need to brandish an entire 4x4 community. CRAIG was introduced to Land Rovers as a small boy when his gran brought him a model Series II complete with horse box (quickly adapted for cowboys and soldiers) on the back. Living in a rural community, Craig soon learned the range, power and value of the Land Rover and set his heart on owning one as soon as he could. Rob Marsden, 44, runs Range Rover Classics – a Norfolk-based company that specialises in restoring Range Rovers to a level of quality better than they left the factory. He achieves this by stripping them to bare metal and rebuilding them with modern rust-proofing techniques, as used in the bulletproof Mercedes G Wagens. “You can’t completely eliminate rust, but you can prevent more than 90 per cent of it,” says Rob, who paints all panels inside and out with modern epoxy-based primers and uses rubber-insulated washes and seam sealer to prevent bi-metallic corrosion. It was originally billed as a family off-road weekend. I’VE SPENT the last six Christmas holidays in the UK and loved every single one of them. No one celebrates Christmas quite like us Brits do. WE ALL know that the enemy of classic Land Rovers is rust. And the best places to find rust-free examples are in hot, dry climates where they don’t spread metal-munching salt on the roads in winter. IF YOU have ever lifted the bonnet of your Land Rover to check the oil level and, well, just fettle around, the odds are that you own a Haynes manual or two. Some Land Rover fans own dozens of these essential servicing and repair guides. Why I love my P38A I REALLY enjoyed the story in March’s LRM about Nigel Hurst who saved a Range Rover P38A from the scrapheap and transformed it into the stunning vehicle you saw fit to grace the pages of your magazine. I too am a P38A owner. I bought mine in 2009 when it was ten years old and, to be honest, not much has gone wrong since, apart from obvious service replacements and tired air suspension components. KEEPING A set of ratchet straps on board can prove very useful for securing even the most mundane of loads. Quality is everything and the usual culprit is the strength and construction of the ratchet mechanism. Avoid any ratchet that allows the catches to move excessively. Our six on test don’t suffer these issues, so how to choose between them? Splitting the contenders between auto rewind and traditional versions is only fair as they offer different propositions depending on the user. If you regularly secure loads in or to your vehicle, much time can be saved using the automatic ratchets.
