Move for immunity
Maintaining regular exercise in lockdown will help keep your immune system healthy, say researchers at the University of Bath. Previously, scientists believed there was an ‘open window’ in the hours and days after vigorous exercise, where athletes were at greater risk of infection. But this study, published in the journal Exercise Immunology Review, reports that infections are more likely to be a result of poor sleep, inadequate diet, stress and bugs picked up at race meetings, than the exercise itself. ‘Provided it is carried out away from others, then regular, daily exercise will help better maintain the way the immune system works, not suppress it,’ say the researchers.
