We showcase the timeless artwork of whitetail fanatic Michael Sieve. As is the case with all of his work, Sieve’s whitetail paintings (featured in a full-color pictorial beginning on Page 50) tell an individual story. At first blush, his work “Nature’s Plan” (above) might indicate a pipe dream of six bucks all standing in a field next to two antlerless deer. In fact, the work is a time-lapse of what real-world harvest restraint can look like in the Upper Midwest (from fawn to 6-1/2 years old). “This is a painting of a real buck that lived near my house for five years,” said Sieve. “I used trail camera photos, antler sheds, personal observations and sadly, his skull and rack to do a portrait of this buck as he grew from…
Who else remembers anxiously awaiting the new hunting regulations pamphlet? If you do, you surely recall how special it was, because it signaled the approach of a new hunting season! The pamphlet shown here is one I recall fondly, even though I was a few years away from my first deer hunt. I’d scour those pamphlets and typically dream about how many rabbits, squirrels and other small-game critters I’d stalk with my pellet gun that fall. Those were the days before they published separate pamphlets for deer season. Coincidentally, the nation’s first published deer hunting pamphlet also originated from Wisconsin. This occurred in 1888 when the state issued a deer hunting pamphlet on the heels of implementing its first bag limit on white-tailed deer in 1887. Before then, hunters shot…

Wisconsin legislation to protect antlerless deer in the Northern Forest Zone for four years is a bad idea because hunter harvest of antlerless deer in that zone is not responsible for low deer numbers. Severe winters that kill deer and reduce fawn production the following year are. Predation by black bears, wolves, coyotes and bobcats is also part of the problem. How I know that protecting antlerless deer from hunters doesn’t work is because that very same method has been tried in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP), where habitat and weather conditions are similar to northern Wisconsin, for many years with no success. Deer numbers continue to decline because of the factors mentioned in the first paragraph. Antlerless deer have been off-limits to gun hunters in the northern half of the…
On March 29, Governor Tony Evers vetoed the bill that would have banned doe hunting in the northern portion of Wisconsin for four years. The bill, which was passed by the GOP-controlled Assembly and Senate, was created as a response to years of complaints from northern Wisconsin hunters about low deer herd numbers. The goal was to stop antlerless deer hunting for four seasons in an attempt to regrow the herd in the Northern Forest Hunting Zone. Evers said the bill took away the Department of Natural Resources’ ability to set season regulations based on biological factors and that it would override the county deer advisory councils, made up mostly of hunters, which suggest season regulations to the DNR. “Those local councils and the DNR could still move to bucks-only…
I grew up hunting whitetails in north-central Ohio and have taken several nice bucks over the years. But none were nearly as big as this one. I had been watching this deer since the fall of 2021, when he was a big mainframe 8-point. He was a resident deer that frequented the farm where I hunt. I had numerous encounters with him that year but elected to pass him as I was after a bigger deer that year. The 2022 season came and went without any encounters or sightings of the buck. He had vanished from the property, but a neighboring hunter shared trail camera pictures of the buck with me, and all I could do was hope that the 170-inch 9-pointer would make it through the season. On August…
