Not sure if I speak to you when I say this, but us graybeards yearn for the old days of deer camp. I’m talkin’ real deer camp, not this modernized whatever it is you want to call it. The days before smartphones, antler envy and woke wildlife management. The meat pole was the epitome of what deer camp meant to us. It was the gathering place where boys became men, and men hammered down any of life’s anxieties that troubled them. At least momentarily. Most of the privileged kids I knew had families that called it the “buck pole.” That’s because they had family land to hunt — private ground usually totaling 20, 40 and sometimes even 80 acres. A place where deer could seek refuge from the public-land gang.…

One of the reasons voluntary antler-point restrictions are so successful at producing adult bucks where ever they are in place is they protect plenty of older bucks with poor antler development as well as bucks with legal antlers on which hunters are unable to count points, besides the majority of yearling bucks. So APRs make it possible for any antlered buck to avoid harvest, depending upon the circumstances, and this is something that happens more often than most hunters realize. Mandatory antler-point restrictions, however, can create problems when it comes to some bucks in the older age classes. I know from firsthand experience, because we have MAPRs here in Michigan. One year, for example, I saw legal bucks on three separate occasions on which I was unable to count points…
Deer antlers are unique. As noted by antler expert Richard J. Goss, “When deer grow antlers they are actually regenerating anatomically complex appendages — something that no other mammal can do.” And, he emphasizes, “The rate at which antlers elongate makes them the fastest-growing structures in the animal kingdom.” Despite decades of antler research, experts still debate how and why members of the deer family (cervidae) evolved antlers. Despite many theories, it’s important to recognize that antlers are secondary sex characters. They evolved handin-hand with certain aspects of the whitetail’s breeding behavior. It is more than coincidence that antlers harden and mature just before breeding season. Because velvet is shed at the end of the growing season, when antlers turn into solid bone, this suggests antlers serve primarily for aggressive…
Public-land deer hunting is vogue now. That wasn’t always the case, mind you. It was oftentimes regarded as a second-rate option for hunters who couldn’t afford to own or lease land. Everyone wanted to hunt posh pieces of private, and if you didn’t, some hunters looked down on you. Today, the script is flipped, and public land is finally having its day. Hunters across the nation are excited about hunting ground that’s open to all, and they aren’t afraid to tell everyone. Many of these hunters will say those who hunt private land have it easier. For starters, regardless of whether you’re a private or public land hunter (or both), don’t bash the other side. Neither public nor private land hunting is easy. And most importantly, we’re all in this…
