Deer & Deer Hunting is written and edited for serious, year-round hunting enthusiasts, focusing on hunting techniques, deer biology and behavior, deer management, habitat requirements, the natural history of deer and hunting ethics
How much money does your state take in during deer season? The short answer is “lots,” but the long answer is one that I’ve yet to see anyone really break down with much validity. Yes, we know deer hunting is a multi-billion-a-year business in America. And, yes, we know the economic impact is critical for wildlife management efforts. Yet, we usually just see some numbers (billions of dollars) and say, “wow,” and move on with our day. Here’s a call for at least one mathematician and one really good journalist (with time on their hands to do open-records requests) to get to the nitty-gritty bottom line of all of it. I hope this column triggers you to want to know more about your state. News out of Missouri tells us…

Handloading puts you in company with people keen to wring all the accuracy and power they can from “powder and ball.” Handloads distinguish the students from the dabblers. According to companies that make tools and components, the handloading market is both strong and resilient. An unending parade of new cartridges keeps shooters at the bench. Not that choices in boxed ammo have diminished. The 1959 “Shooter’s Bible” listed 78 Winchester and Remington loads in its rifle ballistics table. Hornady’s current cartridge roster boasts 265! You will find ammo for nearly every task, from popping plates furlongs distant to stopping buffalo a heartbeat away. But handloaders will not be denied their fun. “Too few people ask questions.” With that, Robin Sharpless disarmed me. He is executive VP of Redding Reloading out…

While patience is said to be a virtue, there are some things in life for which I have little patience. Off-leash dogs coming at me when I am jogging is one (I have been bitten. Twice.). People disrespecting my country’s flag is a big one. There are a few more, but one that really gets my goat are so-called “sportsmen” who do not take killing deer and other game seriously enough to diligently practice their shooting before heading afield. Taking any life is very serious business, and we owe it to the magnificent game we hunt, as well as ourselves, to do everything in our power to be able to make a clean shot when the good Lord provides us the opportunity. Which brings me to the subject of long-range…
Until you have done some long-range shooting in a stiff crosswind, it is hard to comprehend how much the wind can push a bullet to the side. At our Utah school, for example, we were shooting a .308 at 900 yards with a steady 10 MPH right-to-left crosswind, and had to aim about four feet right of the bull’s eye to hit the target. Doping the wind is an art, and why military snipers and other serious long-rangers use some sort of wind gauge when the set up their shots. For most shooters inexperienced in shooting in windy conditions, however, a stiff crosswind simply means one thing – get closer.…
