Deer & Deer Hunting is written and edited for serious, year-round hunting enthusiasts, focusing on hunting techniques, deer biology and behavior, deer management, habitat requirements, the natural history of deer and hunting ethics
It doesn’t matter how much you hunt or how many deer you bag, there will come a day when you’ll be on the receiving end of some really mean-spirited jealousy. Here’s my 2 cents on this topic, based on more than 25 years of near-daily encounters (be that in-person or third hand via social media) here at D&DH. Let’s first set the scene: You just shot the biggest buck of your life, and it’s time to celebrate! You might hoot and holler, or merely sit in silence. One thing’s for certain: You simply can’t wait to tell everyone. You don’t want to leave out a single detail and, especially in today’s age, you’re probably going to take a lot of photos and videos with your phone to document this successful…

To paraphrase the late, great Paul Harvey, “we may never know the rest of the story.” What we do know is that one hunter shot a buck, and two other hunters claimed the antlers. “Huh?” you say? Yes, it’s a mystery, but here’s what we know. It wasn’t a case where hunters shot a buck and fought about who got to claim it. There was no argument at all. The hunter who took the shot and the hunters who recovered the bullet have never met each other. Nobody tagged the buck. The bullet was recovered months after the shot, but the buck didn’t die. His antler carried the bullet until he shed the antler. A father and son found the antler. The hunter who fired the shot remains anonymous. A…
Nobody knows how many deer have died while attempting to jump over the 1.6-mile spiked fence surrounding the Negaunee, Michigan Cemetery, but that number is sure to increase before the threat is removed. Whitetail deer are good at jumping over fences, but the one around the Negaunee Cemetery is high enough (approximately 10 feet high) that some of them are not able to make it over and end up impaled on the spears that form the framework. I first learned about the hazard posed by the cemetery fence on July 5, 2017 when someone called to tell me there was a 6-point buck dead on the fence. By the time I got to the cemetery, the buck had been removed from the fence and was in a frontend loader for…
Dad had a bit of a running start. We could always tell that my wife enjoyed the outdoors by the activities and events that Judy often related after returning to the cabin following an afternoon in the woods. She had much earlier, as a child, realized she was interested in the outdoors, but no one in her immediate family hunted or paid much attention to the outdoors. Her mother did, however and strangely enough, encouraged Judy to take forestry as a 4-H project. “That was fun,” she told me much later. “I learned about tree species, by bark and leaf identification, and by general appearances. We had spruce and pine in our yard, so I already knew about conifers and deciduous trees.” Years later, her college entrance exam reported she…
Do you have a favorite spot to set up a blind or treestand for deer hunting? I have “go-to” honey holes, which have proven productive over the years. Scouting and ground reconnaissance helped me select each spot, paying attention to deer signs to ensure I would see animals moving naturally and regularly. However, some spots that have produced some of my biggest bucks have slowed down significantly. I started to analyze and pay attention to the deer I saw and soon discovered my not-so-sweet spot’s bane. Deer know every inch of their territory. Every trail is like a hallway to use in our homes. When somebody rearranges the furniture in a house, we take note. Deer are no different, and portable blinds, holes in the fence, or fallen trees are…
