Today's deer hunters are victims of media overplay. Videos, TV shows and social media posts glorify mature white-tailed bucks as the kings of the woods. You would think antlered deer are the only ones in existence. Yeah, we all love big bucks. They certainly are smart, crafty and majestic. But truth be told, they have nothing on wise, old does. In fact, I'll stick my neck out and say a mature, matriarch white-tailed doe is the smartest deer in the woods. Think about that for a moment. A mature buck only has to look out for himself during hunting season, and even then he becomes unglued at least once every year — during the rut. The same cannot be said of a fully mature doe. She's always on high alert,…
I was introduced to deer hunting by a farmer friend who butchered his own deer and was told that only “city slickers” would pay someone to process their venison. Not wanting to have that epithet applied to me, I have never had the problem of wondering where all my meat went. I have butchered over 30 deer and my son has processed about an equal number, and our experience correlates well with the data presented in Deer & Deer Hunting magazine (Butcher Shop). I shoot mostly does and have never bagged a really big buck. I have no way of measuring live weight or field-dressed weight, but after the first few deer I became pretty good at estimating how much meat I will get based on my general impression of…

You’ve spent months scouting and planning, and an entire day to pick the perfect tree to hang your stand. The area you selected shows great deer traffic and the trees are rubbed raw. How many times have you sat in the tree and envisioned in your mind how your hunt will play out? Now it’s time to give the woods a couple of days of silence before the season opens. The excitement has already begun to grow … you know the feeling. It’s the night before Opening Day, the moon is full ... and a black pickup truck crawls slowly down the road, a spotlight scanning the field. Then it pauses and a rifle barrel emerges from the driver’s window … POW! The deer you have been scouting and dreaming…
Creator and owner of Robotic Wildlife, Brian Wolslegel, has dedicated his life to building wildlife decoys. Animals as big as a moose and small as a squirrel are created daily in his Central Wisconsin shop. Wolslegel is not on a crusade to eliminate hunting. He’s a hunter himself who was able to start creating some “deer camp lore” of his own this year with his oldest child. “Hunting is a tradition that is passed down from generation to generation,” Wolslegel said. “I want to do everything I can to help preserve that and poachers are a huge threat to that tradition. The only people who dislike what I do are the ones who have gotten caught, or are about to.”…
