Deer & Deer Hunting is written and edited for serious, year-round hunting enthusiasts, focusing on hunting techniques, deer biology and behavior, deer management, habitat requirements, the natural history of deer and hunting ethics
They say the thrill of the chase is what invigorates us to keep hunting year in and year out. Perhaps, but the hunt is ultimately about a deer on the ground, a tag on the antlers and venison in the freezer. To achieve that end result, we study, plan and work to put ourselves — and the properties we hunt — in the best position for success. That's why the thrill of the chase for any land manager should include a basic understanding of how the flora and fauna work in concert to provide those heart-pounding moments. For 40 years, D&DH has enlisted the brightest minds to provide comprehensive information. Despite this knowledge, many well-intentioned whitetail fanatics are still being hamstrung by one or more of the following pitfalls: 1.…
Mr. Schmidt, I want to thank you for your publication. As a senior who has hunted or fished for over 50 years, I find the contents informative and enjoyable. Over these many years I have always received an outdoor magazine every month. Sometimes more than one. Most of them were dropped because they would not alter their formats to make them easier to read for us old folks. Outdoor Life and Field and Stream were notified but appeared to be happy with their content (too many product tests and advertisements) crammed in and minimum true story experiences with print so small I could not read them on glossy paper or colored backgrounds. It's not fun getting old, but I will continue being an outdoorsman and a subscriber to your enjoyable…

I think it was Kramer from the comedy TV series Seinfeld who said it best: “Mother Nature is a mad scientist!” Nowhere is this more apparent than when considering how different animals have physical characteristics that might look strange, but that are best suited to their environment. For example, white-tailed deer are born with white spots, camouflaging and protecting them from predators. Scientist Charlie Darwin explained Mother Nature’s mad tendencies as natural selection — the process by which certain species that possess genetic traits best adapted to their environment tend to survive and pass those genetic traits on to their offspring, while animals without these genetic traits tend to die off — survival of the fittest. It’s important to remember what natural selection is, because it just might hold the…
For many hunters today, the sport of pursuing white-tailed deer has become a 365-day-a-year endeavor that goes far beyond the relatively short deer season each year. For them, all of the hard work and preparation before and after each season is just as satisfying and rewarding as killing the buck of a lifetime, filling the freezer with venison or spending time in the woods. Each year, countless hours and billions of dollars are spent in preparation for the deer season. While there are numerous important aspects of this preparation, which might include scouting new areas, hanging tree-stands or upgrading to the newest hunting gear, hunters are increasingly realizing the importance of managing their deer herds. Many hunters are taking an active role in improving the quality of the deer they…
