A big welcome to our biggest-ever issue of Cyclist. Its strain gauge technology helped usher in a shift in the industry, where power meters came down in price from $2,000-plus to less than $1,000. Cyclist: How did you turn a successful rowing career into life on a bike? Cameron Wurf: I was an under-23 double scull world champion and I rowed at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. VICTORIES FOR VICTORIA’S RAIL TRAILS There have been a string of exciting extensions, upgrades and funding commitments across Victoria’s rail trails. An extension to the Great Southern Rail Trail, between Korumburra and Leongatha, was opened to the public last month. The rail trail is now a whopping 109 kilometres in length. The trail will also receive an additional $6 million in funding to develop key railway station precincts at Korumburra and Leongatha. In other news, funding for upgrading the Murray to Mountains Trail (NE Victoria) was secured in the state budget for the next fiscal year. Further north, the High Country Rail Trail will see a number of important upgrades that will enhance the riding experience, including boardwalks, bridges and sealed roads. Having launched the gravel-specific, 13-speed Ekar groupset in 2020, the company has now followed up with a matching set of gravel wheels dubbed Levante. After finding the legs to stick with the attacks launched on the ascent of the Poggio di San Remo by the best rider in the world right now, Tadej Pogačar, Matej Mohorič produced one of the most scintillating, heart-stopping descents that Milan-San Remo has ever seen. The Bahrain Victorious star took descending to the limits of possibility, and once or twice just beyond it, to create a gap over the elite final group. Cyclist: Hey Ryan. Most would know you as an AFL star with the Sydney Swans, so how did you get into cycling? Ryan O’Keefe: I’ve always loved cycling. Whichever armchair you sat in as a fan, it was hard not to identify with Thomas Voeckler. The Frenchman rode professionally for 18 years, notching up 45 wins, starting 20 Grand Tours and finishing 19. Fifteen were back-to-back Tours de France, during which he won the polka dot jersey and claimed four stage wins. And yet Voeckler is best remembered for his heroic yet ultimately doomed defences of the yellow jerseys he claimed in 2004 and 2011. When it comes to protecting the environment, cyclists are the good guys, right? While riding our bikes we’re not burning fossil fuels or spewing out pollution. But what about that new jersey you’re wearing? According to the latest report from the Apparel Impact Institute, the clothing sector accounts for around 2% of annual global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and is ‘well off pace’ to achieve the 1.5°C warming limit set out in the Paris Agreement. Emissions estimates vary. McKinsey & Company’s Fashion On Climate report claims the industry produces around 4% of global GHG emissions, the equivalent of the combined annual GHG emissions of France, Germany and the UK, while the World Economic Forum puts these estimates higher still, at about 10% of global GHG emissions. ‘These emissions vary because…

Usually this space would be full of yet more insightful words from our regular contributor, Richard Moore, so it is with a heavy heart that we report the news that Richard passed away on 28 March 2022, a few days after submitting this article. If you’re over 45 and seeking high levels of performance then you may well have decamped into one of several exercise realities. The first is that sustained, high-level exercise is inherently good and more exercise is therefore better. Increased FTP equals increased overall health. The second reality is that high-level exercise is inherently harmful – it degrades our biological structures like driving in the rain wears out windscreen wipers. What is protein? Protein is one of four ‘macronutrients’ – the nutrients we need most of, as opposed to ‘micronutrients’ such as vitamins and minerals – along with carbohydrate, fat and water. Both the human body and the food we consume comprise roughly 70% water, which is why hydration is so important, while carbs give us energy and fat provides energy and insulation. Protein is used to make, build and maintain our muscles. Any form of exercise will cause muscle damage, so protein plays a crucial role in both the recovery and growth of muscle and muscle tissue. The best-selling author’s extraordinary 1985 novella City of Glass centres around the mysterious Peter Stillman and the amateur sleuth, Quinn, who tails him from dawn to dusk around the streets of Manhattan recording every detail in his notebook. After weeks, Quinn is no nearer to knowing what Stillman’s purpose is, so he translates his notes into geographical maps of Stillman’s wanderings.
