Dedicated solely to the exhilaration of road cycling, Cyclist is the very first magazine of its kind. A celebration of the rides, the travel and the latest gear – we'll show you how to get the best from your ride every time.
A big welcome to our biggest-ever issue of Cyclist. And by bigger we mean in the literal sense – we’ve increased this edition to 148 jam-packed pages, up from the usual 132, which means it no doubt feels a little heavier in your hand as you hold it right now. Not only do you get more bang for your buck as a Cyclist reader, but we like to think it’s also a sign of just how well the cycling industry is going on the whole. Sadly, when the pandemic first hit in March 2020, like many businesses, a crop of print magazines fell out of existence. The travel genre was a big victim, for obvious reasons, and there’s no doubt travel is a big part of what we do here…

A synapse, says Encyclopaedia Britannica, is ‘the site of transmission of electric nerve impulses’. This means there has never been a more fitting version of Cannondale’s Synapse endurance road bike, as this latest model is built with SmartSense, an interlinked lights and radar system. SmartSense is powered by a battery that sits just above the bottom bracket junction, and comprises front and rear Garmin Varia radars, Lezyne lights and Cannondale’s own wheel sensor. This tech all pairs with the Cannondale app to send alerts to your phone or bike computer. Aside from increasing visibility for the rider and other road users, both in the daylight and at night, the rear light can act as a brake light, and both lights can be set up to adjust their luminosity dependent on light…
trekbikes.com/au Trek has stepped up its sustainability efforts with the unveiling of a new line of Trek-branded clothing featuring what it describes as sustainably sourced materials chosen specifically to keep waste out of landfills. The range includes the Velocis, Circuit and Solstice line of jerseys, shorts and bibs. To summarise: cycling apparel is usually made from synthetic material, a non-biodegradable byproduct of petroleum that offers increased durability, strength and resistance compared to natural fibres, with direct benefits to performance. However, there are ‘virgin’ synthetics, which are newly created in the production cycle, and then there are recycled synthetics, which are made by collecting plastic waste so that no new plastics are being introduced to the environment (see our article ‘How green is my jersey’ on page 108 for a deep-dive…
$489.95, fizik.com The Tempo Decos wowed us at first look – a single, low-profile Li2 Boa dial and PU laminate make them extremely low profile, blending into your foot, so your calves absolutely pop when putting the power down (the important thing). Fizik’s R2 carbon sole is extremely stiff, but the upper foot materials are flexible enough to ensure the shoes remain comfortable all day. The Decos felt like ballet shoes off the bike without cleats screwed in, as so many shoes are. However, what separates these from other bike shoes is that the quality of the finish is seamless, almost literally. There are very few pieces to these shoes, so no pesky threads or loose bits of material can move and irritate you on a ride. Fizik knows there…
$400, pearlizumi.com/au ‘Most of us have a special bib, the one we save for the most demanding rides,’ writes Pearl Izumi. We can confirm a few of us at the Cyclist office have grown such a fondness for the Pro Air Bib. A successful bib short is one you notice as little as possible on a ride – if at all – and the Pro certainly achieves that. Compression, support and moisture movement are taken care of by the feather-light stretch weave Pro Transfer Fabric, which feels soft against the skin. Meanwhile, In-R-Cool technology adds breathability and cooling by reflecting UV light and reducing the fabric’s surface temperature. The welded and taped construction helps eliminate irritation at the stitching, and laser-cut fabric offers a clean finish that reduces bulk and…
