This spring, the National Museum of Women in the Arts celebrates its 40th anniversary with an exhibition highlighting the works of the artist collective known as the Guerrilla Girls. Self-described as “the conscience of the art world,” the feminist-activist group Guerrilla Girls burst into the art world in 1985 with bold text- and graphic-based prints denouncing discrimination. On view from April 12 through September 28, 2025, Guerrilla Girls: Making Trouble showcases more than 30 iconic prints and objects from 1985 through 2007. The Cincinnati Art Museum presents Shahzia Sikander: Collective Behavior, the most comprehensive survey of the Pakistani-American artist’s career to date. Currently based in New York, Sikander has been reframing South Asian visual histories through a contemporary feminist lens for more than three decades. Auden put it, “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” Perhaps for this reason, we are forever entranced by its many miracles, while also being bound to it eternally. From the sea and ocean to rivers and lakebeds, to even our own bathtubs, water can bring serenity and peace while also eliciting high energy and sometimes fear. 4/30-5/4 Romeo, MI In 1887, French painter Paul Gauguin left Europe for Panama, where he intended to buy land on an island and live a quiet life unbound by responsibility and commitment. His plan fell apart almost immediately: he arrived in Panama broke, land was prohibitively expensive and he had to take work on the Panama Canal to make ends meet. It was back-breaking labor, and likely contributed to a nearly fatal case of malaria. And yet, amid a torrent of setbacks, Gauguin used these obstacles to propel himself forward. Within the next decade, he met Vincent van Gogh and Edgar Degas, and he completed many of his greatest post-impressionist works. The topic of artificial intelligence, and its implications for the future of humanity, can be a polarizing one. Including when it comes to the arts. There is the camp of the highly concerned: Will ChatGPT replace us as creators and thinkers? There are the purists: AI should not be engaged in any aspect of the art-making process. Then there are the technophiles who have embraced AI, viewing it as collaborative tool rather than a threat. A feature about British artist Ben Ashton in this issue sparked a lively discussion about the use of AI in creating—even conceptualizing—art. Still life nonsequiturs an art professor might pull out of the supply closet and instruct, “Now paint.” I remember one class with a hammer and an egg. Tanaka would have nailed it. With titles like Balance, a row of bottles on the brink of toppling over, and Love, one fragile prop encircling another, Tanaka animates simple objects and lets viewers in on the joke. Although he probably could’ve have started painting full time then, he went to college where he studied geology and continued to paint.
