If his paintings are the answer, it’s as geometric forms and defined shapes that he stitches together into vibrant, undulating landscapes that are completely and distinctly his own. “Seeing and painting are the same thing,” says Almeida. “Your ability to paint is equal to your ability to see. How do I see reality and parse reality, and how do I break that down so that it’s relevant and harmonic in the unique universe of that painting? Seeing is editing visual reality. 3/7-3/31 Charleston, SC The soft and ethereal landscapes of France Jodoin will be on view for collectors to explore during an upcoming solo show at Principle Gallery in Charleston, South Carolina. Working primarily in oil, Jodoin’s artwork is intuitive and instinctive, a beautiful blend of dream and reality. “When I paint, I constantly tell myself: break the line. I do this precisely to leave behind the details that would create a precise depiction of the subject I am painting,” says the artist. “I want to leave the viewer free to interpret the image and ask themselves, where are the people going? What are they doing? Where are they? I often say that my paintings are like a script without dialogue. There are many clues to recognize a subject, but not…

“Inspiration often strikes by happen-stance,” says Wendy Donahoe. “It’s the catalyst that brings to life the subject of a portrait, but more importantly, inspiration enables the artist to capture that elusive essence of a person as conveyed in my carbon pencil and pan pastel drawing, Nick at Twenty Eight.” A lifeless ruby-throated hummingbird, discovered on the floor of a Vermont shed, iridescent emerald wings spread wide, was the inspiration for Final Landing, which Donahoe completed in colored pencil and acrylic. “On a late spring walk, awed by the brilliance of the day, I was stopped in my tracks as a dazzling display of dappled light scattered shadows across the face of a historic home, providing the inspiration to create The Statehouse on Prince,” says Donahoe. The moment I entered the upstairs gallery of New York’s Art Students League and saw the close-up portrait of a young man, I knew I wanted him. After seeing the work, I felt a duty still to look at the many other paintings for sale at the League’s annual Christmas show, all set randomly, salon-style, to display as many as possible. But as I roamed the room, I was distracted, unable to really see any of the others because what I had seen first remained in my vision. I had already decided on what, and with whom, I wanted to live. Andrea Johnson was brought up in the Salinas Valley in California which is comfortably nestled between the Pacific and the Gabilan Range. Today she paints its fertile fields, mountains, clouds, flora and fauna. In Varied Thrush with Iris, she gets in close to the birds, flowers and a moss-covered log, with dark clouds looming above. Although its fine detail resembles that of a botanical painting or the romantic nature paintings of the 19th century Pre-Raphaelites in England, Johnson begs to differ. 3/4-3/29 Fairfield, CT David Leonard doesn’t currently live in the city, but the urban landscape has long been a source of inspiration for the artist, rotating between the cities he has called home: Austin, Texas, Philadelphia, Boston and the nearby city of his youth, New York. Peter Swift’s work combines two distinct elements: classical realistic still life painting and symmetrical design. He has coined the phrase “Symmetrical Realism” to describe this type of work. Swift uses everyday objects to create these symmetrical still life paintings. His biggest influences have been Louise Nevelson, Martin Puryear and Andy Goldsworthy. Following in the footsteps of these iconic artists, his goal is to use common objects—ones that we use everyday but barely notice—to create laconic, resonant symmetries. Symmetry is a fundamental, underlying principle in art. However, over the past century, symmetry has been a factor, for the most part, only in abstract art, such as the work of Josef Albers and Frank Stella. Emma Kalff is intrigued by the surreal state of memories. “How is it that sometimes we can’t recall who was in a room, but we can remember what the carpet looked like?,” she asks. “Or we can remember exactly what someone said, but have no idea where we heard it?” In her oil paintings, Kalff subtly layers different scenes over one another to explore the strange displacement of memory. She often starts with a plein air painting, takes it back into the studio and uses it as a jumping-off point. She then begins layering, adding figures or objects to the composition until it reaches a point of subtle surrealism. A lot has happened since then, and the effects can be seen in the new body of work he will be presenting in his second show at the New York gallery, which runs March 6 to 30.
