Recently, Australian artist Jaq Grantford won The Darling Prize, a national prize for Australian portrait painting, for her self-portrait, 2020, which was completed during the Covid-19 lockdown. The painting depicts the artist with a direct gaze, her hands covering her mouth, and a dishevelled bun of hair with several paint-brushes sticking out at all ends. The work, Grantford recalls, was a reflection on her time spent during the pandemic. “In Melbourne, we had the longest lockdown in the world, totalling 262 days over six separate lockdowns,” Grantford explains. “We had curfews and travel restrictions preventing us from going further than 5 kilometers from our home. The Susquehanna Art Museum in Pennsylvania presents a new solo show for abstract artist Doug Navarra. Showcasing artwork completed between 2006 and 2021, the exhibition takes a comprehensive dive into Navarra’s paintings and drawings, as well as his practice of working with historic found documents, bold minimalistic redactions and layered geometric patterns. The Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, California, has recently acquired the archive of world-renowned sculptor Richard Hunt. The artist—whose work often calls upon local and African diasporic themes and design elements—has made a profound impact on the world of public art with more than 150 public sculpture commissions in major locations across 24 states, as well as Washington, D.C. In addition, Hunt has held over 150 solo exhibitions and is represented in more than 100 public museums across the globe. The archive includes the entirety of Hunt’s photographs, papers, sketches and letters that survey the length of his prolific art career.…
