Wilder Nightingale Fine Art in Taos, New Mexico, hosts this year’s edition of the American Impressionist Society’s annual Impressions Small Works Showcase. In 1977, the young glassmaker Josh Simpson toured a nuclear power plant in Vermont. As he peered down into a pool that held spent uranium fuel rods, the lights were turned off. He recalls, “I was profoundly moved by the intensity of the Cherenkov radiation emanating from the fuel assemblies so far below me…it was the most intense blue imaginable. I was struck by the realization that without the barium moderated water protecting me, that profound color would kill me. Jessica Gordon has never wanted to box herself in as an artist. “In past shows, I’ve had people say to me that it looked like a group show, even though I did all the paintings,” she says. But in her upcoming show at Haven Gallery, she will present a unified group of works that she calls her Black Water paintings. After experiencing a traumatic year in 2021, painting beautiful things among the darkness was a cathartic exercise for Gordon. While Nien has worked with oils since 1990, he primarily paints with water-based media, which has become his main focus and passion. While Nien lives his daily life on the gorgeous island of Formosa, Taiwan, he travels the world in constant search of new ideas and inspiration—from South Asia to Europe and beyond. He uses carefully observed and directly executed brushstrokes to paint a variety of subjects, including florals, still lifes and landscapes. When Michael Carson got his first job out of college as a graphic designer, he had no plans to become a painter. “I was more of a computer guy,” he says. Then one day he walked into a gallery and something changed. “It affected me enough that I decided to try painting.” Within a few months, he had quit his job and was making a go of painting full time. When Geoffrey Johnson entered his first painting class at the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts, he opened up his watercolors, ready to learn. “The teacher came by and said, ‘Those are nice, but come back to class when you have some oil paints,’” he remembers. “It really pushed me out of my comfort zone. It was the best advice I ever got.” After he graduated, Johnson went to New York City and made his way up and down Madison Avenue with 35-millimeter slides of his work to show to galleries. “My philosophy was that you should start at the top and work your way down,” he says. “What have you got to lose? Artists are risk takers by nature. How else to explain pursuing a profession offering total uncertainty? How else to explain finding a signature style popular with collectors only to drop it? That’s what J Louis has done in a new body of work representing a stunning departure from the demure, angelic female figures he had made a name for himself painting. Louis’ new women are angular. Black takes over where warm reds and yellows previously held sway. Gone are languid poses, replaced by a fierce verticality. A risk Louis is willing to take. “I don’t worry about it. Matthew Sievers learned from his father that you need to understand a rule in order to break it. “He encouraged me to find my own voice, to figure out color theory and composition—the fundamentals that carry a painter through,” he says. In addition to being an accomplished artist, his father, Gregory Sievers, has served as a commissioner on the Idaho Commission on the Arts. Danny Ferrell goes into the closet with his friends and finds things for them to wear in what will become large oil portraits bursting with color and vitality. Comfortable in their clothes, in themselves, in their relationships, and often with their companionable dogs, they radiate a beauty that is often unconventional. Ferrell says, “These are my friends and people that I have an emotional resonance with.
